what type of clay is in a clay bar?

I regularly use claybar on my own vehicles prior to waxing and have been detailing and waxing a few of the neighbors vehicles on the weekends for some extra money and because I enjoy doing it. The only thing I don't like is having to pay $15 or more for a new clay bar every couple of vehicles. Is there anyway you could get a block of some sort of other clay that would do the same thing and be cheaper? I'm not sure if the clay bars are made of some specific type of clay or just some everyday modeling clay and packaged in a car care box to charge the extra price.

BTW, heres a few pics of my neighbors '02 Suburban that I detailed today. That was a big job but it turned out great despite how crappy and nasty it was when he brought it over. I'm not sure if it had ever been hand cleaned before as they usually just run it thorugh the quickie wash. Nice 20" wheels though! That was a wash, clay bar, wash again, and wax with Meguires NXT. I also Rain-Xed the glass, shampoo'd the carpet, cleaned and treated the leather seats, treated all the interior plastic, washed out the underneath and detailed the engine compartment. They were pretty impressed and didn't seem to mind the $150 bill...lol! Doesn't look too bad for 90,000+ miles and nearly 6 years old.

I've never used a clay bar but from seeing pictures of it, it looks like this stuff we used in high school art class. It was used to erase colored pencil or regular pencil. It worked awesome. I forget what the heck it's called but if I had to take a guess, that'd be it.

the "abrasiveness" of a clay bar is very miniscule...it's about the equivalent of 3500 grit sandpaper...it's a finishing product...
