Now that I can upload images again, I've added my latest mod to the webpage. It was something I experimented with during the Holidays. I didn't break anything or get my hands cut up (much). The mod was to polish my calipers to a nice shiney finish. Not too bad a job considering it's my first attempt. I may go back later and rebuff, but it's good for now.

if i was you id get some high temp clearcoat on those so they dont corrode, they look sweeeeet

 

George, you probably posted on this too, but aren't your wheels polished now? Did you remove the silver paint and clearcoat? Or is it just a trick of the light?

Bob, the polishing and cleaning compounds actually leave a residue that will protect the calipers. The caliper metal is an alloy that resists rust, so a coating shouldn't be necessary. Plus, I'm afraid most coatings might discolor with heat. I'll post a follow up in a few months. Keep your fingers crossed

John, Nope just regular Edge Plus rims. They just clean up nice :)

I gotta be honest, that's a cool, fairly low buck mod. Were I more attached to my truck, I'd consider doing that myself.

My father got the idea to do that to my old motorcycle. We bought a '78 Honda Hawk 400 back in the mid 80's for my parents to 're-learn' (both had ridden, but it had been a while) on. Later I inherited the bike and it was mine until just a few years ago. I wanted more, but the bike still had plenty of life left in it, so I traded it back to my dad. It is worth next to nothing in private sale/trade, but just won't die, and costs next to nothing to operate, so we've kept it and continue to just mess w/ it. He's gone all out on the thing doing low-buck mods. I should post pictures. He tore the entire drive side of the engine down and polished the aluminum like you did. Turned a dull finish into nearly chrome. It looks gawdy on such a bike, but it fits w/ the other 'mods' he's done. It really is a trip.. And the best part, all it cost him was his time and a buffing wheel!

 

VHT makes a high heat clearcoat, you should check into it. the carb and manifold on my torino were polished aluminum, and even it corrodes some, now they have a chalky white build up on them. i just want to make sure those things stay bling

I did the same thing to my Eclipse many years ago, and they stayed bright until I sold the car. Eventually, the calipers get a slight chaky haze that you described. A little Never Dull or good wheel cleaner usually tookl take care of that. If not, some AutoSol usually worked.

 

Bob was right. In 7 months the acid in Meguiars wheel cleaner ate the coating and rust started forming. Soo... out came the sander, and on when some manifold paint. I wanted to try stealth black, since it matches the back drums. Kinda nice look.
