I'm restoring 1993 Ranger Rims
My 1st attempt. I needed new rims, so I decided to give it a shot and clean them up first, before purchasing new ones. I have to say there coming out decent so far. I tried one out yesterday. I'm going to do the rest of them. I used rustoleum aircraft stripper to get the remaining clear coat off, then used a plastic putty knife to scrape off the old clear coat, lastly I used 1000 grit sandpaper. I then used Mother's aluminum metal polish.

Looks good! On my old 93 I used oven cleaner and soaked the hub caps in that to remove all the chrome, then chipped the rest with a screwdriver and painted black.

They came out awesome. I saved probably $800 or so. I'm buying new center caps. 4 for $50.

Steps I used.
1. Rustoleum Aircraft Paint StripperThen I used a Brass Wire Brush and Plastic putty knife. 2. More stripper and more wire brushing. 3. NAPA Aluminium Wheel Cleaner and then a green poly pad to get most of the crud off. 4. Wet sand paper 1000. 5. Mother's Aluminum Polish. |
The finished product with new center caps. I got the caps on eBay. $60
