i think you can use just about any kinda crome polish and it will take it off with a little work. I use polish to get the tar off my exhaust tip all the time but I have never had any on my rims. Ill check to see what brand i used last and post it tomorrow.

Isopropyl alcohol works well to remove anything sticky without damaging the finish.

Another thing to remember is that the tar will become runny if you heat it up. Use some hot water, and then try rubbing it off with just a rag. It'll smear but keep using a clean part of your rag and hot h20.

And if all else fails gasoline will remove it but it's pretty volatile, and of course expensive.

WD-40 or Goofoff

Try a small spot to ensure no staining of the paint or metal.

Lighter fluid works quickly, and safely.

Like a few guys have posted, WD-40 is the best, I do ashphalt in the summer and it gets all over our white company trucks, trust me nothing works better we have tried it all.

Plus you can use it for all kinds of other stuff, while the other stuff will sit in the shed for years.

Diesel fuel (off road-high sulfur red stuff) is best and cheap, if there is alot of tar. First remove wheel (to avoid brake rotor and pad contamination). Remember NO SMOKING :) Use glasses and vynl gloves, spray bottle is best or soaked rag. Apply, let sit 5-10 min, repeat. Scrape with a soft plastic bondo scraper, be catious of metal finish, then a medium plastic bristle brush to remove more, buff with diesel soaked towel, inspect repeat if necc. Follow with good wheel and tire brush-wash with simple green to remove diesel residue, repolish wheel if desired. On to the next one. Diesel works as good as lighter fluid or gasoline but is much less flamable, and doesnt evaporate as fast, so it can penetrate better.
