Well, first of all, the reason your pipe is rusty is because A) you live in Ohio and B) the catalytic converter is doing its job.

As far as paint goes, I don't think it will look good over rust. Just my .02.

You could get new pipe for about $100 installed and welded up.

vehicles up north tend to accumulate way more rust than anywhere else due to the salt spread on the roads in the winter. You could try taking a brillo pad and some CLR to the rusty exhaust..nothing like a little elbow grease!

Fine steel wool will do the trick too but the rust will come back. I would just leave it. The fine steel wool will be good to use on the chrome tip too. It wont hurt it. Fine steel wool is probably the best thing to use to clean up any chrome surface before polishing it.

if its polished stainless steel then an SOS pad will work.. if its chrome plated i would just used soap and water, if its rusted then the SOS pad will rip the plating off and the tip will be junk. if its that bad just rip it off and get a new one or just leave it.

Here's a trick for rusty chrome although similar to steel wool but easier. Get a piece of foil and dip it in coke and clean it, you'll be suprized how well it works. If not there's always heat or ceramic paint.

I paint my tail pipe with black Rustoleum. It lasts about 2 months, then I do it again.

Buy a stainless tip next time....? I wouldnt paint it either, but it would probably look better than chrome/rust.

just whack the pipe off after the muffler and install a turndown or something maybe? then you don't have to see your exhaust
