powerwashing engine
 

so is it okay to do this? only thing i could think is the battery. just really dusty and dont feel like scrubbin. anytthing i need to cover/plug???

do you mean pressure washing? and ya id cover the intake plug wires maybe spark plugs fuse box and make sure its cold when you do and ya the ignition coil battery and there another thing forgot what its called think solenoid? and make sure all ur caps are on good.

I just spray some simple green or engine degreaser, let it soak in for a minute, and use a regular garden hose. Works great. make sure the engine is cold too.

spray 'er down, let is soak in for a minute and spray 'er off! it works great and you wont damage anything with the garden hose!

Yes you can power wash, try not to get the alternator or the fuse box and you'll be fine.

okay, i do the same with my bike, lol i even lay it down and get up under it, man i tell ya out of all things i tried simple green always proves to be the best

Just don't get really close to anything because water could get blown past seals. I never cover anything when I wash my engine and it starts just fine every time.

we use this stuff at my dads shop called red hot its alot better then that simple green, its just a very very very strong degreaser not na good thing to use in summer time if it gets on paint to long it can eat threw the paint but i water it down a bit when i clean my engine with it and it takes mud and gunk off in a heart beat they sell it by the barrels and its about 500$ a barrel

When I powerwashed my motor back in June? I covered the ECM, the ignition coil, and went to town. Battery was left alone, and the fuse boxes were fine as well.

I never cover anything up, I just powerwash and don't worry about it

NO NO NO! dont powerwash the engine bay!!!! use a hose man... the high pressure will sneak its way into connectors etc. cover the air filter, MAF sensor, Distributor, ignition coil, alternator, battery, and fuse box with plastic bags!!! and go nuts!

you can do it you just have to be really careful to stay away from any electrical connections and such. Also, don't get really close with the nozzle. you will be fine.

I dunno...never heard of anyone having a problem FROM powerwashign their engine. Obviously dont' sit there with 4kPSI on the fuse box...but if your decently careful about your spray stream...you'll be fine.

well i have had to many customers come in and ask why electrical components are not working right etc. and i always ask is there a reason why all of a sudden these things happen and 8 out of 10 is bc they pressure washed there engines and didnt cover anything up... but im talking like BMW, Honda, and Lexus... so im just lettin ya'll no my side of the story.

I wouldn't powerwash the engine unless it is the ONLY way to get it clean. Everything under the hood is meant to come into contact with water, but not high pressure water.

Plenty of cleaners are available that work just as well with less of a potential for damage. I have always been happy with "Orange Blast" as an engine cleaner. It's a general purpose cleaner and degreaser sold at Wal-Mart and other stores.

Since I have to go to a car wash to clean my truck now, I just use the engine cleaner at the car wash and rinse it off with low pressure water. That seems to work fine. I have never had a problem from it.

FWIW, if the engine is cool when I clean it, I'll just clean it while its turned off. If I have to drive to the car wash to do it, I leave the truck running while I clean the engine. That keeps it from cooling down to fast, and I have heard some claims that it is better for the alternator to leave it running.

steam cleaner? it works well but simple green works great also. i need to do this and put my truck on the hoist and clean the undercarrage. damn sand bogging in july can still tell.

it wont do any harm in a ranger....but i did have a problem when i did it in my Nissan....i finished and then one of the cylinders was misfiring haha dunno if it was from that but it started misfiring right after i finshed...thing went from smooth ride to rough ride until i fixed it

Your Ranger's owner manual shows you which areas require protection when washing under the hood. Look for something like "Cleaning your Vehicle/Engine Compartment" in the index.
