both! you use one bonnet to put it on, and then you use a different one to take it off. The ON bonnet will be tighter and not as fluffly. Will feel kinda like a terrycloth towel. The OFF bonnet will be big and fuzzy and wooly.

Is it a rotary buffer or an orbital buffer? It makes a big difference.

orbital wont make swirl marks...rotorary will. i apply it by hand and remove with a buffer. then go over with a 100% cotten terry cloth towel to get the edges and i do a once over the entire area. if it wasnt 90 degrees out id probaly do it the old fashion way...WAX ON/WAX OFF...plus the Meguires 3 step gets tiresome half way through the polishing stage doing it by hand :-p

ooo then after im done with the wax step i use the wool bonnet to bring it to a mirror like shine.

FYI, applicator bonnets are blue in color and feel kinda smooth. taker-offer (can be used to apply) are the terry cloth bonnets...i just did the ranger and mine this week. took 12 hrs to do the 3 step on both trucks total and woulda taken about 20 by hand plus its been 90+...i gotta be

I've used my orbital buffer several times and it hasn't left any swirl marks. Just a nice clean finish. Now if only I could get the weather to cooperate long enough to get a good 3 step cleaning, polishing, and waxing done!

for the hell of it, tonight i was curious (truck is getting repainted next summer) what would happen if i let the orbiatal sit in place for a long period of time. i let it sit in the same spot for about 10 minutes...nothing. i pressed down as hard as i could until it barely moved and nothing. no swirl marks, no wear in the clear coat, no burn marks...just one hazy mess. got my towel and wiped it off, and looked fine underneath.
