Tire Shine recommendations?
 

Hey guys

I just got new BF Goodrich T/A KO2s on my 09 ranger and am loving them. I'm looking for recommendations for a good tire shine. Previously on my old car I initially used black magic tire shine spray, it looks nice at first but leaves heavy grease stains on the concrete/pavement under my car (stains last for years, literally) and ran off in the rain instantly, also mucking up my rims and making them look NASTY. I then tried Black Onyx Tire Dressing, applied with a foam applicator I was pretty happy with it, it shines well and lasts a while.... unless it rains. I live in Hawaii, on the wet side of the island so it rains... often, basically every single day.

Optimally what I'd like is something I can apply with a foam pad, that gives a good shine, that doesn't sling, that won't run in the rain or muck up my rims. Any recommendations are much appreciated! I'm also aware I'm asking to have my cake and eat it lol.

I may be totally off base and uninformed, but I heard some where that tire shine products can make the sidewalls brittle over time.
Is that true?

Most of that stuff has silicon in it _ that's a petroleum product.
Petroleum rots rubber.
It will either dry the tire out eventually, or make a gooey mess.

My suggestion won't give you the ghetto plastic look, but it will make your tires look new, satiny, and will last awhile. Pickup a bottle of Aerospace 303. On those BFGs it'll make them look better than new with that grayish tint. I've got those same tires, and this stuff is the only thing I've found that helps those tires. Also use it on your tonneau, and all plastics/rubber. It's a preservative as well, with no sillycon.

+1 on the 303 Protectant.

I prefer a less shiny look, 303 gives a satin-like look, as if new from the factory, make sure you always clean the tyre walls well with a degreaser or soapy water, then brush.
Apply with a sponge. Initially, it might need re applying (after a short while) a couple of times before it stays looking nice (build up application)

If you want more shine, get Jay Leno's tyre shine.

You should use a non petroleum based product, no silicone, for the reasons people have mentioned.
UV protecting is also a large reason why you should do this, the sun really kills rubber.

I like Meguire's Endurance Tire Gel or you can go old school and wipe them down with mineral spirits.

The mineral spirits are just cleaning the tyre, and harming it, stick to soapy water if you just want to clean.

As for Megs Tire Gel, it's a bit greasy and slings :(

I use this stuff, its like 4$ a can at walmart and makes your tires jet black for a long time. Its way better than those tire polish kits:

If your looking for a tire shine that works well and doesn't sling all over your clean paint once you start driving use pledge (the furniture polish). that stuff is magic

Other than looking nice, "tire shine" should be used for the UV protection, which i'm fairly confident isn't in furniture polish.

Just use 303 protectant.

You would have to look at the can, I'm betting a lot of furniture polish has some sort of UV protection in it.
Pledge is just basically water, silicon.
I'm sure some products have wax in it and or liquid acrylics.

Yea anything with UV protectant would be good. Not all tire shines have it so read carefully.

Just some input......I've used solicone based products to shine tires for decades, never had a problem with tires drying out or any kind of gooey mess.
I think the tires wear out way before anything like that can happen.
I like "ARMOR ALL Tire Gel", it's in a ORAGE bottle and lasts quite a while, not super expensive.

TIP...when choosing any liquid product (car wash soap, tire conditioner ect....) turn the bottle upside down and watch how fast the air bubble floats to the top, the faster it go's the more WATER is in the product......u don't want to pay for water.

I don't actually care if my tires are clean or not since I use them for off-road adventures. I have recently installed a set of Nitto Ridge Grappler on my truck. Tires are expected to wear off after some time.

I always hear "peroleum rots rubber" but how is that possible when tires r MADE from petroleum??

I think if any product is slinging off your tires it means you're using too much and just wasting it, especially if you're giving it a few minutes to settle on the tire and it STILL slings.
I try to wait about 15 mins before I drive off.
