what to use for wheel cleaning/brake dust removal?
i have some 18" boss chromes on my truck... my normal regimine is to use nxt metal polysh and wheel wax, but thats basically for the polishing step...
i'd like suggestions on a good pre-treatment wheel cleaner. i mean, before i polish and wax the wheels. I had been just hosing them off, then wiping them down with a damp rag, however just hosing them off doesnt remove enough brake dust and dirt, so i've noticed that when i wipe it down clean after with a rag, theres still brake dust and dirt there that can scratch my wheels when i'm wiping em off (and its already happened... there are very very faint scratches on the dish from wiping em down.) i need a wheel cleaner that i can spray on and hose off, that will take off as much dirt and dust as possible before i wipe em down. any suggestions? |

i use OB, a commercial/industrial cleaner to clean my tires. the bad part about OB tho, is you CAN NOT let it dry on ANY painted surface which is clear coated. it works AWSOME for cleaning alot of stuff, just have to be careful, it will etch/cut your clear coat. the other bad thing is, it will etch glass if left on too long. when i was my tires with it, they come out like brand new tires. now for my wheels, i wash them thoroughly every time i wash my truck which is like 3x a week, so brake dust on the rims isnt an issue for me.
as far as getting ob? we buy it in 5 gallon buckets, dad gets it from some distributor, like i said, its not a consumer grade cleaner. oh ya, and it works wonders on carpet. like carpet flooor mats, come out like new. |
Worked for Butler Tire in Atlanta before i moved back to Dallas. We used Windex. Shines chrome like no other and its cheap.

i used to use the meguairs, but the acids in them messed up the clear coat on my center caps. now i use the dupont teflon wheel cleaner, and i clean the whole front clip of my truck with it, great at taking bugs and tar and bird crap off. and doesnt damage the paint.
