Alright so i think its time to spruce the ranger up, looks and performance wis. But for this particular thread im wondering on exhaust. I know its brought up many many times, and ive searched and it seems flowmaster seems the way to go. My main question is, what would make a better sound for the 2.3, going with a single inlet dual outlet muffler or a single inlet single outlet muffler? I ran the single in/ duals out on my past 2 trucks and it sounded good, but one had a v6 and the other a v8. I dont need it to sound like a civic, but some people do run the dual outlets on 4 cylinders but not sure how'd it sound. Im not sure if this is a good idea or not. I was thinking running a single in/single out flow 40 and have it exit out the back at a 45 degree angle with a simple tip.. Or have it come out right before the rear tire, like a lightning style exhaust, but 1 tail pipe instead. If i did run dual outlets then id go with a straight out the back or 90 degree angle..What would (in your experience) sound better? What should i do? Also if anyone has any sound clips id be interested in hearing it. It can be flowmaster or any other muffler to get some ideas.

its a 97, so the 112-115 hp 2.3 4 cylinder. Also just to add, this truck NEVER uses oil!.. had an oil change maybe 4-5 months ago, maybe less, and my oil is like its been untouched when i checked it today. Awesome stuff, and she has around 197,000 miles on it. Solid engines these are. Only thing i had to replace is a timing chain.

Oil change 4 or 5 months ago? unless your using mobile 1 or something then the engines days are tickin down...oil is the life of a motor...even if it has oil, oil is like every other liquid, it loses its effects over time, and yours is pushing it...but its not my truck...

Wait, I thought 97's had a timing belt? Actually I've heard both but anywho...

I have a 97 as well, and I'm in the situation as Ranger Kid17 (ok it's a Mazda, but I even got it in June as well!). I accept that 4 cylinders don't sound great, but I'm just looking for something that will free up some extra power and sound a little louder and better than my stock rusty exhaust. After watching who knows how many videos, I'm pretty sure I'm going with a good ole Flow 40 Series. Any recommendations on pipe size? 2.25" or 2.5"? Also is there anything wrong with letting the pipe run out the side of the truck, ahead of the rear wheel?

i have a 40 series d/0 dumped in front of the axle. At idle it sounds like my buddies 93 5.0 mustang, and is quiet til about 3500 rpm and then it opens up, no rasp, no pingin sound, jus grunt. I used stock 2in pipe but 2.25 is perfect anything bigger is over kill on a 4 banger unless its turbo
