2.3 Performance mods

Hey all,

I wanted to post a review of some mods that I've done to my 2003 B2300:
K&N Intake
JET Chip
Gibson Catback

I put these on in stages, and I definitely noticed a difference with each one, but the overall difference with all three is very noticable. No, it's not 25 hp, but I would guess around 12-15 RWHP which with a truck that's only pushing around 110 RWHP stock is a big improvment. The sound out of the exhaust is deep, but not too intrusive. The truck has a lot more pull in 2nd /3rd gear from 3000 RPM up.

I know there's been a lot of discussion about modding these trucks, but the fact is you can squeeze a little extra power out with intake, a chip and exhaust. I enjoy driving the truck a lot more now. K&N does provide a dyno chart with the intake claiming about 7 RWHP. Not sure if it's that much, but 5 is certainly reasonable.

Austin

My 2.3 does pretty well with the 31" tires.. I've got the K&N 77 Intake, SCT tuner, and magnaflow duals catback.. mine sounds like a fart can.. think a riced car is coming then I drive by with my lifted ranger..

and the 18+ mpg city and extra power are well worth the fart sounds.. and its an automatic..

how did you come up with those rwhp specs?

It looks like I goofed on the RWHP numbers; I looked at the K&N sheet again and it our truck has 120 RWHP stock. They provide a chart with the intake, though that claims 7RWHP. I'm guessing a bit on the rest, but I'm sure that each mod would have to give at least 5 hp, with a total of around 15 (but 15 hp on top of 120 is more than 10% more power; not bad in my book). If I added up all the "claimed" HP ratings, they would be around 30.

It's interesting that your exhaust sounds so different. Mine sounds a lot like my friends' old 1994 V6 Explorer with a Flowmaster. I really like the sound out of the Gibson.

Consider this your first and only warning.

3. Advertising - Please do not advertise a company or service in your signature, avatar, title, or posts. Product reviews are different than advertising. I have the 2.5 in my 2000. It has never gotten any better than 23 miles to the gallon, and now that it has some miles on it(148,000 or so) it is getting 18 or 19. My Dakota V-6 magnum gets better mileage than my ranger and its got 227,000 miles on it.
