Duratec Dynomax
I want to get a exhaust for my truck, I have the newer DOHC Duratec 2.3, and think that the dynomax would be perfect, because it's not to loud, and for a 4 cyl, that is good. I've heard they are pretty modest and mellow toned, and with the rebate they have going on right now, I figure now is the time. I just cant find a dynomax catback in 2.25" that will fit 98+! they have options for the 2.5" but im not sure if I want to go that big. I was hoping to hear what people say about the 2.5 on the dura, or if there is a way to get the 2.25" from the 95-97 model to fit mine? If anyone has any information.. I would appreciate it.. not getting much attention from RPS :(

2.5" should be what you want on a 4cyl 2.3L engine. If you had something smaller like a 1.6 or 1.8 that exhaust would be way too big

I would hate to lose my low end power, thats what I had read would happen, I appreciate everyones comments! maybe i should just go for it?

losing backpressure and losing power is a myth, as long as scavenging is maintained through the system your fine and since its a kit i dont think you need to worry about that. 2.5" is way exceptable for 1.6 and 1.8 dohcs, no point in putting enlarged exhaust on a sohc unless you boost, but your not gonna see any real gains either on your motor so pick it for sound or wallet friendliness. 2.25" on a 2.3 is wek'sos y0!

Since you're going "cat-back" (and I'm assuming staying with a single exhaust) you should notice no loss of power at all. The stock exhaust manifold, headpipe, and catalytic converter are going to maintain enough backpressure if you're worried about that. On the other hand, don't expect to pick up much noticable power either.
If you're doing it to change or improve the sound without it being annoying then the Dynomax system is one of the best bangs-for-the-buck. On the highway, you might pick-up a 1/2 MPG or so but don't base your decision on it. I've got the Dynomax 17315 on mine (4.0 SOHC though). Sounds better, makes it sound like it has more power (maybe it does a little), and maybe gained 1/4 -1/2 MPG at the most. I'm not sorry I did it because it sounds better than stock, gave me a stainless exhaust tip, and didn't put me in the poor house buying it. :biggthump |

Thats what I was looking to hear, I'd like a little more tone to make it sound a lilttle better, make it a little more fun to drive. Plan to do some light towing possibly this summer, so I don't need anything thats going to drive me nuts if I need to keep the rpm's up a bit. Not expecting to be able to lay down rubber or break any speed records. With dynomax having it's 75$ rebate on the system, it would boil down to around 140ish for the exhaust. i have the kit for the 4.0. its a nice bolt on kit, but its tame. real tame. i ended up dmping it at the rear axle, not for sound... i just got tired of hearing rocks plink off the tip anytime i went down a road or slid it on the ground playin off road.... plus i punched out the last cat...3outa 4 isnt bad right lol?
for the money its not bad, just weak, try youtubing it and see what you think |
^^Yeah. The new kits, the Ultra Flo Oval are VERY tame. It was the first muffler I put on the truck about 4 years ago. GREAT performance....wayyyyy too quiet and tame for me.
Do a search on the dynomax systems...a member by the name of Melt had one and he hated it. Opted for a Flowmaster later on for his 2.5L. Something good about the kits though, is that currently, there's a $75 rebate on a catback system. End cost for the kit ends up being in the $120 range. AND...if you opt for the Ultra flow system, you'll get a normal sized muffler. Meaning, you can literally bolt up any normal sized muffler in it's place so long it's the same inlet/outlet. Flowmaster, Magnaflow, etc....bolt one up to the pipes is no problem at all. That's what makes this kit a good buy.....$120ish for just pipe bending is a good deal as it is. Here, you get a muffler iwth it! |
I was leaning towards the Turbo Style muffler, I don't want anything too obnoxious, it being 2.5" I think would need to have the Turbo style right? And is the turbo bigger or smaller than a "normal" muffler? If i got the turbo kit, would I have a hard time finding another muffler to fit my pipes?
I don't think that the kit with the ultra-flow qualifies for them rebate :( I have been pounding my keyboard DYNOMAX DURATEC on all the ranger boards I can, RPS, TRS, RF, FRF, been looking at focus exhausts too.. just cause there duratec. I haven't heard what a 2.5" duratec dynomax sounds like, so I'm just being conservative! |
turbo muffler is the lessor quality muffler...the cheaper system if i recall correctly. Also, the turbo muffler system's muffler is a loooong muffler. You can't upgrade as easily as the ultra flo kit because of the size of the muffler.
All kits qualify, so long it's a cat-back. Just do it....you're way over thinking this whole thing. vids on the net do NOTHING but give you a very rough idea. |
For the price you can't beat it. If you don't like the sound (it's still better than stock) all you'll have to do is change the muffler. Like I said earlier, it even comes with a stainless tip so . . .:shrug:

oh btw if you end up going with this kit, look into getting it welded. i had mine come apart 2times wile driving. not flop on the ground fall apart, but the pipe from the cat to muffler came out from the muffler...needles to say i was running open...

Well than, I do appreciate the responses, maybe I should go around and get some quotes from other exhaust shops. Im not in dire need of an exhaust system, and I wouldn't have even started looking if it wasent for the rebate that I just recently found out doesn't even apply to me.. ugh
I've read those lima's sound a little more different that the dura's as well, if you were towing anythin with your mazda, do you think that flo40 would drive ya nuts at a higher RPM? |
Thanks for the responses everyone, I really appreciate the input. I decided to take the plunge and just go Gibson, I found it for 250 shipped on ebay. Thought it was a pretty rad deal while Jegs is charging 350 before shipping.
