2004 2.3L Duratec Tapping
Hey there,
Ive got a 2004 Ranger with 140k miles. Its got a 2.3L Duratec and recently its been tapping, it isn't rod knock (been there) but its worrying. I figured it was valves so I checked clearance while I had it apart and all of the tappets fit into spec but 2 of them were tight. Could that be the reason that I'm getting this tap?
Thanks.

2.3l Mazda L, Ford calls it Duratec, engines could get faulty timing chain tensioners and VVT(variable valve timing) gears
Quick look at VVT gear here: youtube.com/watch?v=QHaG5LxhiCQ
If you checked valve lash and rotated engine to do them all then probably not a valve issue.
Ford Fuel Injectors can get noisy, same "tick, tick, tick" as valve train noises
Even an exhaust manifold leak can sound "ticky"
