Timing chain issue

New to this forum. I have an '06 Ranger with the 2.3. It wont start & has ben diagnosed as a broken timing chain. My question is how hard is it to replace & re-time it properly, & is it an interference engine & will have bent valves too?

To the best of my knowledge, all of the 2.3 DOHC Ranger engines are non-interference. You can use Google to find several lists and be sure.

The absolute best source for service info is the factory Ford dealer shop manual for your exact year/model. These are expensive new but can sometimes be found used on eBay for about $50~80.

There are also aftermarket manuals (~$20) that go into less detail and cover a group of years instead of just one. One of these should get you by if you have done engine work in the past.

first make sure the timing belt is broke, you should be able to move a front engine cover enough to see if the cam gear is turning when you crank the engine over. If it is broke, get a manual like rwenzing said before starting the job, you'll need it. I've never done a DOHC motor belt, but if it is similar to doing a SOHC, it is something you can do yourself if you are mechanically inclined. good luck!

Its not a belt. It is a chain & usually a chain has an interference engine. Chilton says that piston or valve damage can be caused by the chain not being timed correctly, which leads me to believe it is an interference engine. Anyone work on this actual engine before?

Ok. Confirmed with the Ford dealer. The 2006 Ranger 2.3L DOHC engine IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE. So, if the timing chain is broken, or it jumps time, or if you time it wrong when installing a new chain, VALVE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR!

Time for a new engine. Sucks for me! LOL

There's a chances valves didn't bend. Do a leak down test if you can.

Not according to Ford. Besides I can spend 3-4 hundred on timing chain repair on a motor with 180K on it, or I can buy a complete engine with only 56K on it & a 6 month warrantee & its the same work. I will go with the engine R&R.
