Overheting I think

I have a 2003 2.3 Ranger. Love the truck. Runs great and no problems per the gauges. I hooked up my Scan Gauge to monitor the engine better and my water temperature runs at 260 per the scan gauge but right in the middle of the truck gauge.

I've read everything I can find in the service manual and everything checks out. Fluid is the yellow and is just below the max mark.

The upper radiator hose and heater hoses get very hot but the lower hose stays cool. The thermostat on the 2.3 is attached to the lower radiator hose so I thought bad thermostat. Per the service manual test, the thermostat is good.

The truck only has 42000 miles.

Any ideas? I've read about every past post on thermostats, overheating and cooling problems.

Thanks for any ideas.

Max

If your truck is not displaying any signs or symptoms of overheating, other than the readings from the scan gauge, I’d recheck it in the morning before start-up and see what its reading cold.

Thanks, I just did that and it reads 71 degrees, the same as the outside temperature and proceeded to climb to 76 before I shut it off within 30 seconds. Thanks for any insight.

Tried checking the temperature on the scah gauge again this morning with the outside temp being 49 degrees. The scan gauge read 59 degrees and quickly started climbing. Checking the service manual I found where the 2.3 engines have a cylinder head temperature sender so I'm thinking this may be the temperature I'm seeing on the scan gauge. The temperature raises way to fast for water temp and I can see the cylinder head temp rising quickly as the engine is running. Just a thought, not sure yet.

Max, I believe your engine has two sensors. One is the Cylinder Head Temp (CHT Sensor) and one is the Engine Coolant Temp (ECT sensor). Double check your scan gauge setup/calibration and what sensors you've selected to monitor.

Thanks, I tend to agree. The scan gauge says water temperature but I think it is reading cylinder head. I'll mess with the gauge some more.

One thing I did notice is that my lower radiator hose stays cool so I thought that the water was not circulating. I have a City car I drive and it is a 2008 Escape with the 2.3 and the lower radiator hose on it stays cool also, so I think I'm fine, but 260 is enough to get you thinking.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah seeing 260 would catch my eye as well. You might want to take it in and have the dealer double check or if you have access to another diagnostic scanner you could use to check.
