rpm range

Just a question about my 2.3l dura
2003 5 speed stock 3.73's
with 30x9.5 bfg's and crager rims

70 mph on the highway im runnin 2800 rpms 75 is about 3100 rpms
This seems kinda high to me for 5th gear on the highway

am I crazy or is something off here....

Toreador4x4 05-01-2010 05:08 PM

your speedometer is a little off because of the tires, with stock tires that is about right, but with your new tires your rpm at that speed is slightly lower...

TrndAssassin 05-01-2010 05:29 PM

Didnt notice much of a chance from stock 225/70 to the 30s as far as rpms or spedometer

my 30's are about 50% tread left maybe 60%
just seems that 3 grand factory at 70mph is a lil high and I would think it would cause bad mpg....always thought cruising rpms were supposed to be 2000-2200 rpm range

fraser19 05-01-2010 07:31 PM

i think of it like this your truck has a car engine most cars run around 3000 on the hwy

trcothorn 05-01-2010 10:03 PM

i got a 04 2.3 5 speed with the same size tires 30 9.50 15 and my rpms goin 75 is just a hair below 3000. i guess its normal

rangerboy101 05-01-2010 10:14 PM

4 banger's ♥ high RPM's

Sonic04Edge 05-01-2010 10:46 PM

my 6spd runs around 3k rpms in my mazda at 70

ES894x4 05-01-2010 10:56 PM

3k is the begining of the power band for most 4 bangers. on hondas its the 80 test. at 80mph a ls integra will be at 3500rpm a gsr 4000, and a civic si will be at 4500, granted those are 1.8's and a 1.6's non and vtec equipped, but the duratec doesnt produce peak power till 5250 and doesnt make peak tq till 3750, so 3100 is nothing for the motor and should be more efficent at moving a brick threw the air at that speed then at lower rpms. ive always considered 2000rpms to be boggish for 4cyl none of them are really happy doing anything that low

I have the same issue with my 03 Ranger 3.0L w/ 105,000mi ... about 3K at 70 and 3250 at 75mph... is there something i can do to lower the RPMs or do I even want to?

FixOrRepairDaily 10-25-2010 12:13 PM

If you want yo stay lower than 3k drive at 55mph. At this speed it also save gas too. There's nothing you can do about it but driving slow. Or maybe try changing gear ratio at the axle?

thmxt9 10-25-2010 12:24 PM

how hard is it to change the gear ratio at the axle? right now its 4.10

or do I even want to? I drive about 4 hours every weekend. is driving at 3K RPMs bad?

FixOrRepairDaily 10-25-2010 12:43 PM

High ratio is better power reduce gas mile.
Lower ratio poor power increase speed and save gas. I never tried it but it what I heard

FixOrRepairDaily 10-25-2010 12:45 PM

No driving 3k is normal for 4cyl. Mine is the same.

thmxt9 10-25-2010 12:51 PM

mine is a 3.0L V6... I assume this is where they say 3.0L is 4cyl power and 4.0L Mileage...

FixOrRepairDaily 10-25-2010 01:05 PM

I Donno. I used to have 91 explorer 4.0l it runs 2.5k rpm on 70mph.

djfllmn 10-25-2010 01:54 PM

03 4.0 SOHC 5spd 4.10 2.5k at 65

thmxt9 10-25-2010 02:29 PM

RPM

My 2010 XLT w/ stock tires, 2.3, M5,3.73's, runs about 2500 at 70mph.

Jerky001 10-28-2010 12:40 PM

2009 Ranger XLT, Auto Trans, 4.10 Rear Ratio, 2.3L Duratec.
I do a lot of Interstate driving. Usually around 80mph, she tachs @ 3100 to 3200 rpm. She wants to cruise in that range.

My truck cruises around 2500 rpm around 65mph, my truck loves 2000 - 2500 rpm, sounds like its working to hard anything over 3000 rpm.
