Slight over rev
 

Maybe you guys can help... Before i take her to the shop.
I have a 2009 XLT with the 2.3L Auto tranny..
When cold the engine revs to about 1800 then slowly drops to just below 1500, and sit to warm up. I'm wondering if that is too high, because when engaging into gear at 1800 it's rough, after the first time of doing that i learned to just wait and let it slow down. So the cold idle is roughly 1200-1400. Now the 2nd thing, when cold the shift from first to second isn't butter smooth, and i can feel the downshift if Stop when pulling out of a parking lot. It's not tire hard chirping either. After not even a mile everything is warm and everything is smooth as butter. I'm almost 100% sure it's a problem that happens only in open loop.

I just bought this truck so it's got 30 day 2000 mi warranty so it'll go in saturday if it's not something normal.

I believe the over rev is causing the hard shifts, but not sure.

The 'over rev' is a high idle feature to get the truck warmer, quicker. The hard shift when cold is normal IMO. If it is shifting hard when it warms up then I would have it checked.

Anyone know the cold rev? i understand the process of higher idle just seems to race when started.

Thats the high idle. Next time you start the truck cold, let it sit and idle for a couple of minutes. The idle should drop down to a normal rpm on it's own

Perfectly normal, I don't drive my truck until the idle settles. A lot of times, after the idle settles, and you start driving the idle will raise again for a little bit, which is probably why you're getting a hard shift.

You should let the truck run for 20-30 seconds after start up before driving because all the oil in the head drains over night or the period that it sat. You want to give it some time to cycle oil up to the head thoroughly before you go.

Cleaned the IAC idle seems to be better races slightly but not like i believe it should.
Have done some research and checked out the symptoms in the Ford Repair manual and a " late or Slow" shift between 1-2 could be caused by the intermediate band being loose.
The fact that i just bought this truck means that i have no idea what kind of miles it has on it.
It's a 2.3l with the towing package, so i'm assuming he towed something, which could have caused the bands to loosen. Its going to the dealership saturday, i've read a how to on here about adjusting the bands but i'm not the one to wrench on something i have no idea about. And transmissions i know nothing about.


Do i have anything to worry about driving it with it shifting hard into 2nd when cold until saturday?
