Welcome to the forum
Rangers used two different 2.3l engines
1983 to 1997 Rangers had the 2.3l SOHC Lima engine, often called the Pinto engine
This engine used a timing belt
2002 and up Rangers used the 2.3l DOHC Mazda L engine, Ford called it Duratec 23
This engine used a timing chain
The 2.3l Lima did have triangle(cam gear) and diamond(AUX gear) marks
Not sure on the 23 Duratec
So which one do you have?

Since you posted on the Duratec section I assume that is the engine you have.
I am pretty sure the washer comes with the bolt from Dorman
More Information for DORMAN 926885
You should also replace the Harmonic Balancer which comes with everything you need as a kit

'03 Duratec 2.3 timing
My Mazda 6 (shares engine w several Ford models including Ranger) lost timing less than 2k miles after it was re-done. Reason for doing it was numerous symptoms of various sensors going bad periodically (MAF, TPS, Crank position sensor, I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one other) occasional misfire, crappy running & milage, code 0340. Also, driving it would lose the tach whenever letting off the gas, and it would be very jerky when holding speed.
I threw every $75 sensor I could reach into it, making it temporarily a little better with most of the replacements. The timing job finally did the trick. For 3 weeks.
The mechanic was unaware of the friction washers. I've heard there are three or 4. One comes with the pulley bolt... Where do the others go? What is the indicator that they need replacing? Mechanic did not crack the lower timing case, if that helps. Thanks
