Why $140 plastic thermostat?

The auto makers crying for bail out and make old reliable parts out of plastic now. 2002 ranger 2.3 61,000 miles would not heat up took off thermostat to find plastic tabs holding pressure on spring broke off. Gee i wonder where they are in the system and will they cause more problems later.. ford wants $140.00 and advance auto wants $160.00 why mess with the old reliable $17.00 thermostat.

That ticks me off. I have an 07 and its 58 bucks at Checker and Oreilly Auto. And my girlfriend has an 06 Mazda 3 with that same crap... I liked changing my thermostats every couple years...won't be doing that as often now... Klowns wreckin' my preventative maintainance plan.

I had a 95 contour with a 2.5 duratac. stupid plastic impellers on the water pump. i got lucky and they didnt break, but the bearing seized and snapped my belt. however i was amazed to find the aftermarket water pump had a metal impeller.

wtf ford.

Wow....that's expensive.

I haven't had to replace the t-stat yet, but I've never paid over $10 for my past vehicles. Is there something special about these??

I have only a few words that may clear things up

Because they can. Thats probably one of the only reasons. I work at a Yamaha Dealership, I know how it works. It sucks, but unfortunately that's how it is. The only thing I can say is maybe write a letter/email to Ford. It may not help, but you never know.
