$950 worth of trouble

so about a month and a half ago the X started giving me problems, I had the clutch done(which isn't included in the $950) and it still gave me problems getting into gear so i changed the fluid, came out burnt and replaced it with dex/merc III and I didn't make it home later that week.

I tore down the transmission in school and my teacher told me it needed syncronizers so I had them on order with blocking rings and a few peices for the shifter slop. that was $670. then i needed a bearing...92 dollar bearing.

today when I got to school started taking apart the output shaft to replace the syncro....and when I got to the one for 1st and 2nd there were some shavings, figured it was from the bad syncro and took it off and SURPRISE!!! 2nd gear is toasted, bearing was non-existent and its missing a chunk and has a few cracks....and the output shaft was okay-ish with some rubbing to the journal, I cleaned some of it up already, still working it...the gear is 150 bucks which brings us to 950, and I haven't gotten the fluid and cleaners factored in yet.

pics to follow after a parts store run

That REALLY stinks! Almost sounds like a good used (w/warranty) trans would have been a better bet! I CERTAINLY have to hand it to you for having the cajones to open it up yourself! I am on pins and needles waiting for some photos!

yeah I was looking for a used/refurb in good condiction, and I couldnt find one anywhere under $1250. decided that this was a good learning experience and the guys at the stealership were suprised that I was cracking it open myself, then told me if I mastered it I could make a crapton of money of it....and it seems easy to me so maybe i'll look into trans rebiuling insted of engine rebiulding

the trans went out on the ranger 3 years ago, and the clutch was on its way out when I sold it.

Depending on the truck, you gotta pick your battles. My sister's friend's '84 2wd trans went out (148K mi.) and trans shop quoted her $1600 P/L to rebuild it. She only pd $500 for the truck 4 mo. ago. At my sister's request I got involved and found a junkyard trans for $100, cleaned it up, charged her $150 to install it in her driveway and now it's back on the road.

That truck is a worn out POS anyway so the used trans will probably outlast the truck.

Sorry to hear your problems. You probably did the best thing anyway by fixing it yourself even if it did cost $1000 in parts 'cause your truck is newer and 4WD.

Good job. The dealership is also surprised at the parts I order sometimes, glad to see you give it a shot, it's a cake walk once you get it done.

well I'm hoping this will last me until I get out of school and a little bit into my career so i can build up for my mustang....

and I've been told there's a lot of money to be made rebuilding manual transmissions, so that might be my specialty instead of engines
