2009 B4000 AKA Ranger 4WD dead
I have a 2009 B4000 basically a Ranger - Seen lots of posts about 4WD quitting, but none for 2009 Ranger/B4000.
I'm kinda mad about this - the truck is only 4 years old and 4WD quits.
I'm already into 300$ having changed the Shift Motor - thats not the issue.
Based on what i've read about other issues - my symptoms are this
It started this year - switching from 2WD /to 4x4H (4x4 L no work either with Brake pedal applied) the Module to the left of the radio would click several times and maybe it would switch from 2 to 4 , sometimes a few tries as the module would stop clicking after ( i forget exact # Clicks) about 4-5 clicks.
Now the module just clicks and it never switches - so I changed the Shift motor - still nothing.
Checked the fuse under the hood - its ok, the connector to the motor still was clean inside with dielectric grease from factory.
When Starting the truck both 4WDH and Low lights illuminate and extinguish as normal.
Any help would be appreciated - i've had to load the box with cement blocks just to get traction...

Yeah its my 1st 4x4, all my other rangers - about 3 of them were 2wd and never any issues. The Dash switch seems to work - I removed the connector from it, an there is not clicking in attempt to switch to 4x4, when I put the small connector back on to the dash switch and rotate it, the clicking begins bit no switching to 4x4.
Thanks for chiming in. The parts in Canada are really expensive compared to US also, its crazy - shift motor is about double what you would pay in US.

Troubleshooting: Transfer Case Troubleshooting - The Ranger Station
Does your shift motor actually move the ****? I'd remove it from the tranfer case, but keep wiring attached (may need to be grounded) and see if it actually rotates the **** when somebody operates the dash switch. And can you turn the little matching **** within the transfer case, using pliers? Maybe your new shift motor is bad?
BTW, the shift motor needs to be regularly exercised, about 1x per month to prevent seizing. Oh, and 4x4LOW needs to be stopped and have gearshift in Neutral/Park and foot on brake (and on clutch if manual).
You can always go the manual route: Easily Convert Your Electric BorgWarner Transfer Case to Manual Operation! | The Shiftster

Thanks for the tip, I will try your suggestions. I have to verify the wires from the module are not shorted to anything first (fuses are good, maybe a position sensor wire is bad) . I can test both motors using your method, If nothing - I can hold out for a wreck to find a 4x4CM for the truck. I hope its plug and play and does not need the dealer involved to program it. It is a 2007-2011 FORD RANGER 4X4 TRANSFER CASE MODULE 8L5A-7H473-AA.
And if all that fails I did take a look at the Shiftster - very simple and I can remove all the electronics crap. Not as convenient, but based on the location, pretty easy to get at - most of my 4x4 use is in winter just trying to get out of the bush so I can head for the office, once at the pavement I could just get out and flip it to 2H.

Shouldn't affect the computer to much i wouldn't think they did make some twin stick manual tcase trucks for a while around 2003 you may try to get a hold of all the manual shift components from one of those and swap it over. I swapped my auto transmission to manual and still use the auto PCM so it should theoretically work the same way.

Thanks for all the help, after blowing 300 on a perfectly good shift motor and verifying all the wiring it was the 4x4CM.
The 4x4CM was doing everything right according to the code scanner, 2H,4H, 4L was attempting to switch, but was not switching. Ford Canada wanted $420 for the 4x4CM, and i was very lucky to find a local 2009 Wreck with the same 4x4CM which worked as soon as it was installed. $75 bucks for the 4x4CM out of the wreck - Perfect!
