I am having a difficult time finding a replacement transmission for my 02 FX4. It has the manual transfer case and requires threaded bosses on the tail section to mount the transfer case shifting linkage. The transmission tag number is 1L54-MA. I have found many sites on the internet that indicate they have rebuilt or remanufactured 1L54-MA transmissions, but when I call about them I am told they don't have any cores to build.

I have information that a 1L54-HB transmission will work if I exchange the tail section from my transmission. I am concerned that would void the warranty but may be my only choice.

Does any know of a source that might have the 1L54-MA transmission? I would also consider a low mileage used one if it is in good condition.

 

You should be able to use any 2001-2011 4.0 SOHC M5OD-R1HD, as there was nothing special about the Level II transmissions aside from the levers and the extension housing. You're just gonna have to swap out the extension housing that way you can keep your thread bosses for the transfer case shifter. I wouldn't worry too much about voiding the warranty since you wouldn't be opening up the transmission to swap that part out.

Only the 2002 FX4 and 2003 FX4 Level II had the Manual transfer case option, so finding one, "as a rebuilt", would be very very hard
