what gears for 4.0L Auto with 35's?

It's my daily driver and has stock gears which i believe are 3.73. I feel like its straining the rear end to move those big tires. What ratio would be more appropriate?

I don't do any serious mudding. Just trails and dunes. It's on pavement 90% of the time and I use it to haul my banshee quite frequently. I don't want the motor to be screaming while doing 70mph down the freeway with higher gears. It does have o/d though.

4.56 if you mostly drive around town. i would go w/ 4.10 if you stay on the interstate alot.

5.13s aren't bad.. but i find myself going for 6th all the time, so i guess its a little excessive

i liked the 4.88s, skipped from 4.10 to 4.88s so no experience with 4.56

4.56 if you do a lot of highway at more than 65mph, 4.88 otherwise.

4.88 is probably too much for a daily driver isn't it?

4.88 and 5.13s with 35s are both right at 3,000RPMs at 70.

edit: with a 5 speed, no idea with auto

no, its a Dana 35, standard rotation. I remember the shop who got mine had to look them up under M35 or something weird.

so the front is a dana 35 and rear is a ford 8.8? will the 4.56's fit in both stock carriers?

if so all i need are these for the front?
Yukon Dana 35 4.56 Ring and Pinion

and these for the rear?
Yukon Ford 8.8" 4.56 Ring and Pinion

and would you suggest an overhaul kit for them while I'm at it?

Sweet. Luckily I have a Randy's R&P about an hour from my house. :D
So that will probably be happening by the end of the month.

You'll love it after the gear change! It'll feel like a brand new truck. Best money you can spend on a vehicle, well that and a locker.

4.88's with 35's, in my opinion.
I had 4.88's on my sport trac (4.0L SOHC 5 speed AUTO) with 33's, and it was just a tad low on the freeway at 70+. It will be perfect with 35's, should feel great.
4.56 will be okay too, but given my personal experience I would go with 4.88, no question about it.

i vote 4:88 and be done with it. highway or not. these motors just dont have enough grunt to turn a higher gear with large tires efficiently on the highway and you will be happier driving around town as well

4.88 without a doubt. I get BETTER mileage numbers on the highway and in hte city than I got in stock form. And my highway runs are 75-80mph and still pulling numbers in the 17 range. At 60-65, I'm pulling 21mpg's. My overall average is about 16.5-17(mixed). All these numbers are coming from a properly calibrated ScangaugeII, with 4.88's and 35's w/ 5spd manual trans.

Truck is also my daily driver.
