2.3l regear?

So I have a 2wd 93 ranger with a 2.3l and a 5 speed with an open 7.5in rear with 3.73 gears and I'm trying to make it more off road capable due to a bet that was made to me. So I plan on running either 29in or 31in tires probably swampers or something like that (open to different tire options if anyone has any opinions) but any info on these little motors pushing these size tires would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum

1993 2.3l Lima engine has 100 horse power, not great, but OK torque at 2,600 RPMs 130ft/lb

If current tire diameter is 27" with 3.73 ratio
Then 30" with 4.10 ratio would "feel" the same power wise, in the different gears

If you put on 30" tires with 3.73 ratio "actual" ratio becomes 3.37, which would Lower RPMs vs speed in each gear
So if you are now driving in 4th at 50MPH and RPMs are 2,500, 30" tires would make RPMs lower, about 2,200
This is great for MPG and Top Speed, but sucks for "get up and go" power

The 4.10 ratio with 30" tires puts RPMs back to 2,500 at 50MPH
Also makes speedometer closer to correct speed, lol, but you can re-calibrate speedometer with a new gear in a 1993 ranger

4.10 ratio is found in towing vehicles because it gives engine more "leverage" to get a load moving and keep it moving because of higher RPMs

If you are just going for "looks" then an OPEN 4.10 is fine, if actually off-roading then I would get Limited Slip(Trac-Lok) 4.10

Changing the carrier(differential parts) is not all that hard but you also have to change the pinion gear, which can be hard.
1993 to 2009 Ranger axles are all the same width, 1992 and earlier were a few inches narrower.
So 7.5" or 8.8" from a 1993 and up Ranger will bolt right in to your 1993, so used axle may be easier than swapping internal parts, if you can find one, 4.10 is a popular axle because bigger tires is a popular choice, lol.

go with the 2010-2011 rangers or the 2010 mazda b4000

they are equipped with the 8.8 31 spline axle shafts and rear disc brakes which are a lot better than drum brakes
