John,

I have a 1988 Ranger v6 2.9L, and have the same problem. I don't know which of transmissions Ford was using at that time is in the truck. Is there a way I can tell from the VIN number which it is?

Thanks,
Tony

Look at the sticker on the inside of your driver side door. There should be a transmission code that you can cross reference to the model of transmission you have.

While your at it, turn off the caps. If its an auto I forget what the code is, if its a manual it's an M5r55 or M5r1 (I forget, i usually just refer to it as the M5). When then went from the OHV motor to the OHC motor, they modified it for more torque. Thus resulting in it being know as a M5r55HD or M5r1HD.
