Leaking Transmission

Leaking Transmission

Hey I have a 94 2.3l 2wd, and the trans is leaking. Its not too too bad, but It seems to be getting worse. I took it to get an estimate and they told me I should not even fix it because it would cost around $1000 and the truck is not worth much more than that. Can anyone give me any useful info on replacing this seal? Do you have to drop the trans or can you do it with it in. Anyone got a link to a diagram of this part of the trans. I think Im going to get another estimate.

You cant see the leak in the picture because we had already cleaned it up, but its that seal right before the crossmember. Thanks in advance for any useful info

if you can drop the trans yourself.. just buy a seal kit, then open it up, drain it all out.. examine everything.. make sure it is all good, adn seal it up nice and new like.. then remount it.. shouldnt cost much more then a hundred to do it all yourself, cheaper then that if you have the right tools and know just what your doing.

well I have access to a shop and a lift, but I have never pulled a transmission. Is there a manual or a diagram anyone can recomend? Am I in over my head? Should this reallycost $1000 with labor?

i replaced my 4wd trans 2 years ago for 1,100. it was a rebuilt unit and while i was there i did change out my clutch/pressure plate and the internal slave cyl. did it in a drafty barn during the winter, took about a day to pull it and once i got my parts about a day and a half to put it all back together. worst things had to be seperating the transfer case from the trans and broken-off manifold bolts for the Y-pipe. had to drill those out and re-tap. i had lost 2nd gear and when i had bought it the fluid level was low. it had bad shift-rail plugs on the top-back of the trans. i later put a hurst shifter in, my nylon bushings were shot and what better time for a upgrade. (200 dollar upgrade though. )

you might want to take a better look at the leak itself because that seal doesn't normally leak, what normally leaks are the 3 rubber shift rail plugs up above that across the back of the top cover. When they leak they run down the side of the transmission right where the extension housing mounts to the tranny body at the seam.

reeeeaally that sounds suspiciosly like what my problem might be, any tips on checking these? Would I still have to pull the trans, or could I just reach up or, like get to it through where the shifter is. Im not really sure exactly what your talking about, but any help you could give me would be great, Im just sick of seeing that little puddle taunting me.

if it isnt those rubber plugs, you dont hae to take the trans out to do that gasket. take the driveshaft and crossmember out, support the trans, drain it and take the tailhousing off. there is no gasket in there. clean it thoroughly and use black rtv

This was a real common problem on these trans.......

Make sure you stay on top of the oil usage. I had a small drip that I left unattended. The tranny locked up going 60 mph. It wasn't fun. All I had to do was top it off and save a lot of $$'s.

Thanks for the good information, http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...aintenance.htm is the link if anyone is interested. I am going to try this tomorrow and Ill let you guys know how it goes. I really really really hope I dont have to do that whole seal, but the truck is pretty old and it did sit for a while, so hopefully its just these plugs
