Swapping all fluids in the drivetrain

Ok, doing another tune up and maintenance run and I am going to change the fluids in both axles and the trans.

What is everyone out there running nowadays? I have a manual trans, and a trac-lok in the rear.

I run a full synthetic dex/merc in my tranny. and pennzoil makes a synthetic gear oil that supposed to be good.

on the front axle you may be able to use a hand pump and get it out of the fill hole.

amsoil all the way!

All Amsoil:

Amsoil 5w30 Series 2000 in the engine. I change the oil yearly (about every 18-20k miles).

Amsoil Synthetic ATF in the tranny -- shifts much smoother since I flushed and filled with that stuff.

I was using Amsoil Severe Gear in the diff, but I'm using conventional fluid now. I will use Amsoil 80w90 severe gear WITHOUT friction modifier at some point. I have the oil, just haven't changed it yet.

I am not using Amsoil grease though. My front bearings are my upper ball joint (with a fitting) have TomPac TP-2557 synthetic bearing gel in them.

Thanks Guys! Yeah, I have a hand pump at work that I am going to use to get as much of the old stuff out as possible.

Dang John, 20K on an oil change EEEEEK I am assuming that you change filters on a regular basis right?

That is how I have swaped my fluid out of the front several times.

I run..

Engine - Mobil 1
Trans - Royal Purple
Transfercase - Mobil 1
Powersteering - Royal Purple/Lucas
Front/Rear Axle - Valvoline 80w/90
Grease (ball joints and such) - Mobil 1

The new axle I am building will use Amsoil or Mobil 1.

If you can't tell, I belive in synthetics.

It is pretty easy, Just stick the tube down in the hole as far as you can, then pull the handle. Keep doing it until you can't get anymore out.

I was changing them every 6k. I'm using the new microfiber filters and going to see about doing it every 10K. 2 filters per oil cycle. We'll see how that works.

I get the oil tested at the end of each year when I change it. So far, viscosity going up has been the main problem -- the oil passed on every other parameter and wear metals are below what's acceptable for a 3000 mile oil change.

I'm very comfortable now doing long drain with Amsoil. Since viscosity change has a lot to do with dissolved solids that are emulsified by detergent action, the microfiber filters may slow that down considerably. Hope so. It's all an adventure...
