Trans Temp Climbs Quickly...

Ever since Saturday at the sand dunes, my trans temp likes to shoot up very quickly. I drove all day Saturday and it didn't get beyond 180 until i started spinning the tires going up a hill, after that hill it went to 200-210 degrees (i shut it down and let it cool back to 150-180). Then, we went out on Sunday (when everyone was on the way home) and the temperature gauge was reading 180 within the first 20 minutes of driving, soon after i had to shut it down and let it cool again. Normally it seems like it should of been at 130-150.

And i now notice small trips into town it can shoot up to 150-180 very quick.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

How would i check it? On the way home it stayed about the same temp as on the way up 150-180, it just seems to heat up a lot quicker.

Check your level, low level would cause it to heat up faster.

When is the last time you changed it?

Outside temp?

I'm normally at 150-165 warmed up, and 180 towing a trailer if thats any thing

I'll check the level again, but i know before i left for the Dunes it was good.

Trans fluid and filter was replaced 20,000 miles ago.

And it may of been a little warmer on Sunday than Saturday.

you might have got some water in it?

also are your brakes dragging? whats your tire pressure? I know down here its in the upper 80s now, so it will run warmer.

Thats what happened to me when I got water in my tranny.

It went to 210 one day just driving to my house from work, it normally is 150 right there. I took a right hand turn and went to hit the gas...and BOOM...tranny blew. I had no gears at all...broke the main clutch

Check for water; that sounds like the culprit.

If you drove through any water that would have went above the diffs Mark, you should change your diff fluids.

Depends if they extended their breather tubes or not. I am not too concerned with mine as I am going to be completely swapping out the front and rears. The front in mine NEVER turns unless the hubs are locked. When it gets swapped into my buddies '89 BII, we will change the fluid in it then.

I plan on it, but not for a while. I didnt seem to have any issues going to work today(first time I have driven it)

I am not too worried about my trans fluid. It is what it is. LOL

You can see if you have water in there by pulling the line off the trans cooler and staring the truck. When it comes out see if it looks like strawberry milk, not clear and red like it usually is.

BTW my breather tubes are extended at least a foot longer than stock, I know the front goes all the way up to the hood, the trans goes up the back of the engine as well as the transfer case.

When I put the new axles in my truck, I am going to extend all of mine up to the engine compartment.

I need to change my t-case fluid because it doesn't have a breather hose on it and hasn't since I put it in.

Even if you splashed a lot of water, it can get in your transmission.

If you catch it early enough you can flush it a few times and maybe be ok. Otherwise your looking at a paperweight.

I'll check the trans fluids then.

Also am just going to buy new hose/tubing to extend the breather lines.

The transfer case use 1/4" inner diameter fuel line. I think when I bought some before it was like $0.99 a foot from the local O'Reilly Auto Parts. That is what I am going to get tonight and use.

I checked the Trans fluid, its good - Dark Red, no milky substance. I might have it flushed this summer.

I also checked the diff lines, the front one is high by the drivers side shock plus it has a small cap on the end of it, i know i didnt submerge the front end that much - the fluid should be fine.

The rear seems to be the only possibility of water since the breather tube is shorter. I'll probably flush the rear diff fluid and get the trans fluid flushed later this summer.

Why not flush the transmission yourself? It is super easy if you have someone helping you (I bet your dad would help you). AMSOIL has a how-to on their site for flushing a transmission.
