5-speed trans fluid condition..change?

97 2.3 5-speed ranger with 125000 on it. checked fluid today and it was horrid. didnt smell it but the color was NOT pink or red. more of a brown black/VERY dark red. would it hurt my trans if i changed this?

Changing the fluid on a high mileage AUTO trans has been known to not be a good thing.
On a manual , no matter the mileage , change it , it will only help.

Care to explain why it is not a good thing for a higher mileage auto to get fresh juice?

it is a good thing. for some reason everyone thinks changing the fluid in an auto ruins it. Hmmm, then i wonder why ford says to change it every 30k miles?
