Hello everyone,I'm new to the forum and was wondering about some advice.
My Mom has a 2000 3.0 ranger with almost 150k on it.Reverse went out on it so she took
it in to the dealership mechanic and got a estimate for $1,900 total cost on rebuild with no warranty or $3,000 on a re manufactured tranny with a 3 yr warranty.
She is on disability and tight on money so she will be taking out a loan to get the money so another thousand dollars is a lot of money right now.
My question is would it be better to spend the money and have the warranty?
and Is there a good chance that the tranny could go out again after a rebuild?
She just wants to go with the cheaper option but knowing her luck with this truck it would
end up going out again,I think.

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

 

Take it to a transmission shop, a reputable one, and get a quote. They might offer warranties as well. Dealerships are notoriously high priced. I'm sure an independent shop would charge you a lot less for the rebuild.

 

Yeah take it to a shop. Some mom and pop shops will work out a payment plan as well.

 

Aamco... 2 year warranty for a rebuilt tranny down side is I had to pay $2600! Fml.

 

The one problem with taking it else where is this dealership has done all the work on it since she brought it and she trusts their work.Just three weeks ago they did body work on the box after someone backed into her.Also I think the closest tranny shop is about 45 miles away,and I'm not sure how trustworthy they are.

But I do think It would be wise to at least call around and get a general estimate, The parts on the rebuild are about $450 and the rest of the $1900 is labor according to the estimate.I know trannys are tough to work on but thats a lot of labor cost.

Well that's what you get from the stealership. A shop will charge $70 per hour, the dealership will charge $90+.

It's up to you whether you want to pay more for the same work. Seems weird you don't have any tranny shops nearby.

 

i wouldnt go to aamco, heard way too many horror stories about them.

 

We picked it up from the dealership and so they decided to charge 50$ for the diagnostic since we didn't tell them to go ahead with the repair, I think we're going look around for a better price.
Been searching the web and looks like those trannys are $1500 with a year warranty on all the sites I've seen.but then $600 more for a 3yr or $1400 more for a 5yr warranty.
So far I found a ex-ford dealership mechanic in town who offered a re-man w/3yr warranty swap for about $2500.He has a shop at his home.Problem is he is pretty busy for a few weeks.

Anyone think its ok to still drive it around town for a few weeks?
The dealership said not to drive it at all but I don't think it will matter too much if we go with a re-man.I figure it might be bad if we go with the rebuild because I don't know if those bands will shatter more in there and mess more stuff up.but we might still just have someone rebuild it.
