4R70W VSS reading?
 

The 4R70W in a 2001 Explorer has the same sensor as the 5R55E for speed (vss)? Or does the Explorer read off the axle tone ring?

I know it talks about the vss issue in the link below for Swapping An Explorer 5.0L In To A 1998-Up Ranger.

I wonder if the Explorer PCM has to have the VSS reading in order to know when and how to shift the transmission

I believe when the PCM no longer receives the VSS signal, it puts the transmission into a default mode to prevent transmission damage, hence the hard, high shift points ect.

98~2001 4-door Explorer is off the rear axle ABS sensor (like a 98~00 Ranger) and is adjusted in the 4WABS module. 96~97 is directly from a signal generator on the transmission or transfer case just like a 95~97 Ranger.

Bob does the PCM require it to run?

I believe that the transmission shift points are primarily based off corrected VSS and load. There are secondary shift point limitations determined by RPM but they are more for near redline than for part throttle.

Keep in mind that the 98~2001 Ex PCM does not use the rear ABS signal directly. It is first changed from a low voltage sine wave to a 0~12v square wave in the 4WABS module. It is also corrected for tire diameter in the 4WABS module. The output 12v square wave is then used by both the speedometer and the PCM. If you could find a 1356 that will accept a signal generator, that might be OK to be used directly by the PCM.

I dont have the ABS module or an 8.8 to read a signal from, that would be my problem.

Try a mid 90's F-series/Bronco 1356. One of those might have the signal generator. IIRC, the SG mounts in the same hole where a speedometer cable would have fit. If that's the case, then you might be able to use earlier years as well.

hate to bump an old thread but i cant find exactly what im lookin for.

im throwin a dana60 on my rig and just realized the vss could be an issue...is the one in the rear end the ONLY VSS our vehicles use? my trucks an 01.....

Your 2001 3.0 Ranger takes the raw speed signal from the transmission's Output Shaft Speed sensor. The rear axle sensor is used for ABS only, so there should be no VSS issues with the axle swap except recalibration for tire diameter and axle ratio.

Obviously, the ABS would be DOA if the rear axle sensor is eliminated. This may not be a good thing, especially on the street, because the 2001+ 4WABS also provides electronic front/rear proportioning.

oh thanks alot man. thats amazing to hear. i figured i was gunna have to make some kinda tone ring to connect up where my driveshaft bolts up and throw the vss sensor there.

but awsome! im stoked now. i was really kinda worried about that. just hope your right haha

but i do remember seing a vss when i was doing my manual tcase swap
