4WD and 4WD low lights flash periodically

And the 4wd won't engage.

This is happening on my '96 with a Dana 30 front axle. The only thing the Electronic shifting transfer case has to do is engage so the axle gets power.

I checked the code and all I am getting is P1000 which I beleive is more driving required. I drove the truck to and from work 5 miles each way, is this enough or is more driving really required? This set up has been on the truck for over 3k miles without incident.

Any suggestions?

Mine did that when my Auto hubs were not engaging... Once I fixed my hubs the flashing lights went away.. its either that or Shift motor is gone bad

P1000 is a code that is set whenever the PCM is reset. It will not be removed until all of the OBDII monitors have completed successfully. Some monitors, especially the Catalyst Monitor may have trouble completing during short trip driving. The P1000 code has nothing at all to do with the transfer case diagnostics.

An ordinary OBDII code reader can only access PCM codes. For 96, the codes for the transfer case are stored in the GEM. A Ford dealer has the special reader that can access codes in the GEM and all of the other onboard modules.

The position sensor (encoder) inside the T/C's gearmotor/encoder assembly is often the cause of shifting problems and codes. It is sensitive to water infiltration and corrosion.

It must be the motor, because I don't have any hubs.

Yes, that looks like a T/C motor/encoder assembly of some sort. At this point, you don't really have any evidence that points to it as the problem, right? A trouble code might help nail it down.

check the fuse(s) and the switch.. i had the switch out to paint the console and the lights flashed.. it also flashed when i popped the fuse (also happened to be the same fuse as the cig lighter???)

thats all i want to get myself into. good luck, i hate electronic t-cases

^^^ I had my switch disconnected recently and my 4HI and 4LO lights were flashing.

its just more of a pain in the ass whn as far as u know everyhing works fine..

did u by anychance do a body lift any time recently? after i did mine i didnt cut some clip on the wiring on the t-case and something got snagged or w/e so it wouldnt work

HarryTasker Jan 19, 2007 06:16 PM

No body lift on the truck. I checked the fuses in the engine bay and the cab. the bezel hasn't been removed. This only started after the first really cold day of Snow earlier this week.
