What could cause drips coming from transfer case :(

Hey guys I am wondering, is there a seal on the transfer case? I have some drips coming off mine but don't seem to be leaving a spot in the driveway. Not sure what to do about this. Also what gear oil does the X-fer case take? Want to replace it before winter.

Where is the drip coming from? There will be a seal at the input, front output and rear output.

I may have to take a pic and post it when I get a chance. It is coming from the front of the T-case by the tranny X-member. There is a round black hocky puck looking thing and it has a couple drips on it

Probably just the front output seal. It just uses regular Mercon ATF by the way!

Is that hard to change? I plan to do a full fluid change in the front and rear diff's, and transmission soon and I just looked under it and noticed the drips and got pissed lol. Guess that is to be expected with 245K miles lol.

Just drain out the drain plug, fill through the fill hole. It is just a gear case, nothing complicated about it.

to replace the seal, you just gotta take the front driveshaft off and replace that seal. pretty easy

There's more to it than that... unless you can stretch that seal over the flange that the front driveshaft bolts on to! lol

easy!

1.remove the front driveshaft
2.remove the yoke from the t case with a large socket ..30mm?

use whatever you have to your disposal to remove the seal at this point. you will most likely need to dig into the seal with a pair of pliers to get it out. just try not to damage the seal contacts on the shaft or the aluminum bore on the case. the seal uses a steel core coated in rubber, so its not much of a headache to remove as its not in there to tight, using a punch and hammer to collapse the seal core will make it easier to remove but it will still be a bit of a pain since the case is not apart and you cant just knock it out..

once its removed..

3. clean contacts
4. lubricate new seal with vasiline and set back on shaft
5. make sure its evenly installed! gently begin tapping it in at the edges until it sits flush at the bottom of the bore.

then install the yoke, nut and shaft.

helpful hints..
use and impact wrench to remove the yoke nut, or you will need to use a wrench on the yoke to keep it from turning will you use a socket wrench on the nut. dont jam it in 4x4 and wrench on the nut in park as this may stress internal components

use something like a larger pipe to set the seal evenly, something that will go over the shaft and contact the seal completely then tapping the pipe from the back will set the seal nicely

replace both seals at the same time, the rear wont be far behind but uses a similar method of removal..
