i have a '99 with the 4.0 and automatic tran. whenever i locked it into 4low this morning it was hesitant to lock, but after a few moments of clicking it finally went in, then when i went to take it out, it just clicked for a few minutes and then the 4x4 high and 4x4low lights started flashing and now it doesnt even try to shift. can somebody please tell me wtf is wrong???

also have recently ran into a problem. i went to get into 4hi/4lo when offroading it would lock the hubs in and then go right back into 2wd . WTF?

vacuum leak?

I have a 99' too, just had the whole 4X4 system resealed. The hubs are controlled by a vacuum lock/ loose system. If its a truck with a lot of use i might have to say you have a leak somewhere therefore its not properly engaging/ disengaging. Could just the 4X4 motor dieing out too....i had that fixed too. I've had so many 4X4 issues lol...but nothing to mess around yourself with. Unless your a mechanic...i would take it to a ford specific mechanic.... Just my opinion though. Hope that helps!

Flashing lights means that the shift motor is probably dead. It is know to fail.

i have had and still have many problems with my 4x4. some i self diagnosed and fixed. others i took to professionals and they fixed, and what i have now three places have looked at and have no idea what is going on. i am not impressed at all with fords 4x4 system. needless to say, i will most likely not be going with ford for my next vehicle.

all of you, pull off your shift motors and you can manually turn the switch to put it into 4wd or 2wd. you should clean the shift motor so it will work properly.

yea, i pulled my shift motor after i started this thread, and go figure, it's dead. but the good news is that a new one is only $71
