4x4 not working correctly

Hey Howdy,

My 2001 ford ranger edge's 4 wheel drive only engages when the engine is off and the ignition is on. When the engine is running it won't switch on or off. But if I turn the engine off and just keep the ignition on, it engages fine. If I start the engine when it is engaged, the light goes out but it stays in 4 wheel drive, but won't disengage until I turn the engine off and leave the ignition on.

what a cluster.....

any who, any ideas?

Common issue with 4x4 problems in the 2001 and up Rangers is the 4x4 Control Module.
Where it is changes by year, yours is probably behind the passenger side kick panel.
Remove panel.
Or behind the glove box, you can often see it and replace it by opening glove box(remove contents) then pull in on the tabs, and that will allow glove box to lower all the way so you can see behind it.

Module is labeled 4x4 CM or 4x4 Control Module.

I will look to replace the cm unit....
it just seems odd to me that it will work fine with the engine not running

like the computer is getting a signal from a sensor that is not allowing the 4 wheel drive to engage.

I did recently change the battery. So the system reset.

I'll let ya know when I had replaced the part and if it fixed it.
