5 gear

What does it mean when it says wrong 5th gear ratio code

RonD 12-02-2017 12:12 PM

Welcome to the forum

I assume an automatic transmission

What year and what engine size?

In general it means one of the 3 speed sensors in the transmission is showing wrong shaft speed, it could be sensor problem or mechanical problem if shaft speed is actually faster or slower than it should be.
If it was a sensor issue then there would most likely be another code with current code.

Also post the EXACT CODE number you have, 99% of Code translations into english, or any other language, are often misleading

Is the transmission shifting into all 5 gears?
Are there any other symptoms, i.e. slipping, hard shifts, slow Reverse engagement?
What does the trans fluid look like?
what does it smell like?

Just rebuilt it now it says wrong 5th gear ratio that's all my buddy scanners reads it's a 5R55E automatic transmission

Thanks for your answer

So a 4.0l engine, 2.3l and 3.0l used 5R44E

No Code Number?
Transmission codes start with P07 then 2 more digits
P0735 might be it

If trans was rebuilt recently then I would recheck fluid level, could still have some air inside.

There is no "Thats the problem" with P0735.
Computer is just reporting that when it tells transmission to shift into OverDrive(5th) it is not doing so
Ratio is the engine RPM compared to driveshaft RPM
In 4th gear the ratio is 1 to 1 so if engine is at 1,000rpm, driveshaft will be at 1,000rpm, 1 to 1 ratio
OD(5th) is .75 to 1 ratio, so if engine is at 750rpm driveshaft will be at 1,000rpm

Transmission has speed sensors inside and final sensor(on 2001 and up) is the speedometer sensor, OSS-output shaft speed sensor

So computer is expecting to read Engine RPMs as 75% of OSS(driveshaft) RPMs after it uses solenoids to shift transmission into 5th gear

Now on the 5R44E or 55E 5th gear(OD) is also used as 2nd gear, yes, lol, as funny as that sounds 2nd gear is actually 1st gear with Overdrive turned on.
So Ford changed the 4R 4-speed into the 5R just using computer software......"very clever these Americans"
And it works well, so how does your 2nd gear work?

2nd gear works good but my buddies scanner from Snap-on just says that fifth gear wrong ratio so you're saying that on the tail shaft speed sensor could be no good they didn't change the speed sensor in the transmission

RonD 12-02-2017 03:28 PM

No, thats not what was said
If your speedometer didn't work then maybe it could be OSS sensor
And you would also get a different code for that
P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

P0788 Shift/Timing Solenoid High
P0789 Shift/Timing Solenoid Intermittent

As you can see the computer can be pretty specific, especially if it is a wiring or electrical device issue, when it decides to set a code.

ONLY getting P0735-Gear 5 Incorrect ratio, to me, would mean a mechanical issue, blocked passage, low pressure, ect........not a wiring or electric part issue, so not a sensor or solenoid issue

Never used Snap-on code reader, it should have a setting(or sub-menu) to get exact code numbers, not just definitions, wouldn't be much good as a reader if it didn't, definitions are not all that accurate

thanks for the help I'll try to get somebody else to scan and see if they find a code

RonD 12-03-2017 03:41 PM

If there are no other codes then the rebuild missed something or didn't get the valve body on correctly.

You never answer the question about shifting?

Does it shift normally and does it shift into overdrive(5th)?

It feels like shift good and in to overdrive when i push the overdrive button it feel like it goes out
