Detroit truetrac vs Powertrax no slip for 2wd
Hey guys,
I have a manual trans 2 wd ranger edge with a 7.5 in axle and am looking to improve traction. Between the no slip and true track which is better? Price is the same, minus install. I mostly do town and highway driving, but need something to help when I do go off road. Some specific questions I have are
Which is better in snow and ice?
Which is better when parallel parking (Which I do a lot of)
How much better off road is the locker vs the limited slip? Is it worth the poorer street handling?
Thanks

Yeah... They really are completely different. I suggest you do some more searching and read reviews on each, it really depends on what you want.
Food for though, a lot of people run auto lockers even in 2wd cars (mustangs and such), whereas some people hate them even in jeeps and trucks, and would prefer a limited slip.

I am leaning towards the truetrac, but have one last question. I am under the impression that the true trac is stronger than most of the clutch driven lsd's. By this I mean that it takes more torque before the tires are allowed to "slip," making it closer to a locker than other lsd's. Is this true?

I have a Torsen in the back of both of my trucks, and a TruTrac in the front of my '93. I love them. While not a locker, for 99.99% of the wheeling I do, these are fine. I do drive a lot on the street, and really wouldn't want a locker for that reason.
In your case, I would recommend the TruTrac - you won't be disappointed. I suggest spending some time in the dirt, learning how it works/feels, and how to use the brakes to help transfer power from the slipping wheel. An afternoon of this will build your confidence and knowledge - then you're good to go!
