5R55W - Automatic Transmission:

2001 Edge 4X4 4L auto 5R55E
I have searched and can't find anything on this trans. Does this fit, I like the gear ratios in this unit and was wondering if I could just do a tranny swap.

5R55W - Automatic Transmission:
Used in some 2002-up Ranger and Explorer models. This is a computer controlled overdrive (five speed) automatic transmission. This transmission is similar in appearance to the 5R55N, but very few parts are interchangeable with it.
Gear Ratios:
1st = 3.22:1
2nd = 2.41:1
3rd = 1.55:1
4th = 1.00:1
5th = 0 .75:1
Reverse = 3.07:1

5R55E - Automatic Transmission:
The 5R55E is a computer controlled rear wheel drive automatic transmission used in 1997 and newer Ford Rangers and is identified by transmission code 'D'. This is a computer controlled rear wheel drive overdrive transmission.
Gear Ratios:
1st = 2.47:1
2nd = 1.87:1
3rd = 1.47:1
4th = 1.00:1
5th = 0.75:1

Not sure if they are interchangeable, the w came out mainly for the explorers. It had a different bell housing that would bolt to either the 4.0 or the 4.6. It also did not have a dipstick or dipstick tube. The electronics are probably different as well.

Thanks for the quick response. I am going to need a replacement trans soon and was wondering what the differences were. Any gear options available for E's?

Most likely you will need an 02-03 ex trans. Maybe computer too.

In 04 OBD II CAN became the new diagnostic standard, im not sure if ford changed electronics.

You will need the explorer harness and graft it to your truck.

Here is some info i have. I really haven't looked too deeply into this.

Great info thanks, looks doable but what a can of worms. What manuals did the info come from?

It looks doable, but there are several differences in that pin out. It wont be as easy as just grafting the harness in and swapping pcms. You did speak correctly when you said a can of worms, that looks like you will have lots of trouble trying to get it working correctly.

The info is from ford factory manuals.

I was wondering what the gear ratios are for our trannys. My truck must have the 5R55E. I really dont like that tall 1st gear very much. It seems like the truck would have an easier time getting going while pulling something or when taking off (if you can get traction) with the 5R55W.

Swap a torque converter in your truck. I have an 800 rpm of stock stall, it makes a huge difference off the line.

If you have a SOHC i don't know if it would be helpful or not.

245Ranger Jul 5, 2008 05:44 PM

Yeah my stock one stalls out quite low. I would think a higher stall converter would help even more on the SOHC 4.0 since the OHV 4.0's seem to have more low end grunt. I'd like to do some more with my truck but I can't until I get my car finished. After that I'd like to get a trac lok for my truck, an X cal 2, an e-fan and a higher stall converter.

Blhde Jul 5, 2008 06:37 PM

If your open diff now a trac lok would be a waste of money, IMHO. Locker is where its at.

245Ranger Jul 6, 2008 08:24 AM

I don't really want a locker as this truck is a daily driver. It just sucks not being able to get the power down when im trying to acclerate going around a corner.
