Manual FTW. I can smoke my brothers 08' 4.0SOHC Auto in a race! LOL

 

The automatic is a better choice for towing and is rated higher because of the torque converter. I will say though, I have driven both a 3.0L/auto and 4.0L SOHC/auto and thought they were both sluggish feeling because of the auto tranny. I got back in my truck and it felt much peppier. In a lot of newer cars, the trend of automatics getting better gas mileage/performance is pretty common, just not in the Ranger lol.

 

I have an auto, and honestly... I'm 50/50 on it. Up until my Bronco (truck prior to the Ranger) I had manuals. I bought the Bronco, liked the power but wished it was manual. Then I bought the Ranger. I was looking for a manual, but the deal I got on mine was too good to pass up because it was an auto. Now, when the auto gives itself up, no questions asked, a manual will be swapped in.

Im def a manual fan but i was blown away with the SMG tranny in the M3's It gave me a whole new meaning to the good ol' "slushbox" after drivin one. Anybody ever driven/gotten to experience one??

 

I like a manual transmission. I have more control over the gearing.....great for stopping on snow or slippery roads IMO.....less braking needed. On a newer vehicle it saves around $1200 - $1600 (CAN) off the purchase price, allowing you keep that money in the bank of use it for upgrades and options.

On my Ranger though, at least with the 3.0L......towing large loads (1500-2000lbs) is REALLY hard on the clutch and engine. Even towing a semi-large load up a steep hill is nerve racking. It can be done, but sloooooooooooooooooooooooowly.

 

If i knew than that i would be living where I am now i would have a manual but when i purchased the truck in Charleston there is now way i could deal sitting in traffic on all the bridges every day lol

 

I wish I had a manual trans and a 4.0l. I hate automatics and my slow engine.

 

BMW's SMG is only a single clutch system.. the DSG (dual clutch) that VW/Audi uses is quicker, look out for a similar system in the new BMW models though. It is odd to drive though, it clutches on take-off like a manual, and up-shifts like a manual. They are proven to shift quicker, and get better MPG than their manual equipped counterparts.

i've got to say i love the auto in the 1500 but i couldn't do without a stick in the ranger.

 

Higher cost to purchase (new), shorter lifespan and higher repair costs, lower mpgs, less driver control, usually less gears, all "steer" me away from an auto. Can't even push/roll start the truck if the battery's low.

I live in an urban area and a manual is no biggie. Shifting seems to me like complaining about steering more on a windier highway.

With a 4 banger a manual is almost a necessity for power and control on the highway, mountainous backroads, getting around with a load, etc. But I have to admit with a single cab it makes it more difficult to take 3 passengers in a pinch.

 

Auto, I love driving manual in every aspect, however, I drive a 15-spd Peterbilt for 9 hours a day so coming home and not having to shift can be nice, especially on hills and heavy traffic.

 

If you think you can't jump start an auto your dumber than you look! (So I hope I'm just misreading you.)

Auto's with the 4.0 are great. I wouldn't have traded mine for a stick. I don't get the big deal; I mean you hit 4th, 5th, or 6th gear depending on the trans. and that’s it no more shifting. I've haved both auto's and sticks in 4cyl, v6's, and v8's. in the 4cyl. I'd take a stick every time they are just toooooooo sloooooooow without it. In the v6 and v8 category it's a auto. Why have to shift gears, why have to replace clutches. Just drive it.

Some people get all gun ho a stick is more fun to drive well..........IT'S A RANGER NOT A MUSTANG!!! As was pointed out by many of you not to long ago these trucks are not fast, are not sports cars, they are pick up trucks!

In the '09 model year the only Ford truck you can get stick in is the ranger. I just wonder how long that will last berfore that's gone to last?

 

I find it pointless to own a stick unless its behind a performance car (ie: vette)... especially in Southern California traffic i sit through every day

 

yea, the cavy is a manual and that used to be the wife's, now she has an explorer that is an awfulmattic. i catch my self trying to clutch and shift in it when i have to drive it. it sucks. especially if i don't catch myself the e break is the third pedal.

That makes a lot more sense. But if the batt. is completely dead you can't roll start a stick either. Learned that with my '88 F-150 when I cracked the batt. and all the acid drained out. Got pushed all the way up to 70 mph and couldn't get it to fire up.

 

I have an auto, but a lot of times would rather have a manual, but there are times I can't drive a manual because of bad knees.

 

I own both in a ranger.

I will say this though as you get older the fun factor of a manual trans gets really old. No to mention the towing capacity of the auto in the ranger is more than the manual.

 

Hey, yeah, I meant push/roll start it. Around here we call that jump starting too.
