8.8 upgrade problems

I'm moving up to 33's and I've been trying to upgrade my 8.8 with gears and a trac-loc. I had a much harder time that I thought I would trying to find a used carrier to replace my open diff. Not thinking, I got one that doesn't have the ABS ring. I really want to put it back together and drive it. Should I go without the "posi" or deal with my ABS not working and look for another one? Even if i were to buy a new one it doesn't look like they have the ABS ring.

The tone ring is a separate piece. You can move it from one diff to the other.

I'm with John, tap it with a hammer it will come right off. you will probably need to remove the ring gear to get it off and put it back on

Hey, Zach, let us know when you get a frame to go with those axles, lol...

Looking very nice. It's amazing how spindly the axle looks next to those big meats.

Thanks John.

3 weeks! and I will find a frame and even a body! hehe

Actually a D60 axle tube is smaller than an 8.8, not sure the thickness of the tube though. the full floaters make up for it though :)

Not a dumb question, lol -- if you don't know, you don't know. I'm about to swap 8.8's again myself. I have a 31 spline FX4 8.8 with an ECTED electric locker in it and I'm putting on a 1992 8.8 full width F-150 axle in it's place. I'll migrate my ring, pinion and diff over to the new housing.

It's got MUCH bigger riear drums. 3" wide and I don't know what the diameter is but they're pretty beefy for a Ranger. Should help braking I think.

Hey, Zach, my comment on the D60 is: [in Homer Simpson "donuts" voice] "Full floaters...ohhohohohohohoh..." [/in Homer Simpson "donuts" voice]

yeah full floaters are awesome. i love the fact that the weight of the truck never rides on the shaft.and that you can pull the shafts without removing the tires.

one bad thing... weight, the 37s are so heavy i can barely mount them on the axle. and the D60 and D44 weigh too much to even pickup or handle by myself.

The 35's are at about the limit for my aging body to throw around -- I can only imagine the 37's, lol.

Yes, heavier axles are nice things but they are...heavier.

My most recent mods taught me the value of a transmission jack and so forth. Some of this stuff you just can't "wrestle" with. I know picking up and moving around my transmission by myself in the basement was quite a deal -- definitely at the limits of my strength, lol.

Yes those transmissions are heavy! I reinstalled mine myself with a regular jack, never again will i attempt such. I was sore for weeks on end. Not to mention I almost dropped it on me.

Ha ha! Well, no, sorry. I'm not sure what diff is in this new axle, haven't looked. Possible I'll be letting the FX4 axle go with whatever diff is in the current donor axle. Probably a standard Ford LS or open I would suppose.

The 31 spline housing and axles are a worthwhile upgrade for a Ranger though. I'll see if there's anybody local interested in it. I'll let it go for what I paid for it which was $50.

Yeah, I would dread the cost to get one shipped anyway.. always best to sell local and have it be a pickup or short range delivery
