91 ranger wont move ...
my 91 ford ranger acts like its in neutral in all gears ,park does work however ,,,It has the 4.0 and has 138000 miles any Ideas where to look?????
Start by checking the fluid
fluid is full ,,,,acts like its not circulating ,,,,,,
what color is the fluid ( meanin is it burnt or is it strawberry syrup red)
fluid has a little singe ,and a its dirty but doesn't smell burnt ....
i know this may sound dumb but did ya check 2 see if the shift control arm on the side of the tranny is actually moving with the shifter up top?
oh yea ,,,it comes out of park ,I loaded it on the trailer ,so Im thinking it has to be valve body or the pump or converter is out .....I didnt know how much is controlled by the electronics in this truck ,you know fly by wire ......Im hoping againt hope tha its something simple ,,,,
what year is it
91 or 92 ....
hmm, id say its the pump is out of it then, its been since 97 when i went 2 school 4 auto & diesel, i did a class on automatic trannys, im tryn 2 rack my brain 4 ya, wish i had my school books handy id look in them
check the fluid level with the truck off and then with the truck started, if the fluid level does not change, the converter or pump is not working. start by removing the trans pan and inspecting the filter. make sure it didnt fall down or that it isnt clogged. also look for brass or excessive debris in the trans pan
I really appreciate the help ...the truck isnt worth putting a lot of money into ,so I think I might try pulling a cooler line to see if the fluid is flowing ,but I really think its a waste of time ...the truck looks ruff but it only has 138000 on it .....

This why I hate automatics. a standard has gone bad on me but I always found a way to get it moving or you get warning signs in advance so if you neglect it then you will be stuck. I've never had a standard just stop working.
