92 Ranger hard shifts

Hey guys I'm looking at buyin a 92 ranger xlt 4x4. it has the 4.0L with the a/t. When i took it out for a test drive I noticed it shifts kind of hard under heavy acceleration but fine when you drive it nice. Is this common in these trannys or do you think I should steer clear of this truck?

Check the tranny fluid and see if it smells burned or not.
Also check the dipstick and see how dark it is.

Shift kit might help as well, but the tranny could be going out.
