Unless the person that told you this was talking about putting 44's on the 8.8 they were wrong. The 8.8 is plenty strong enough for our 4.0L engines. You can even run an 8.8 with a 5.0 to a point.

ProjectBeastlyRanger 08-24-2007 07:15 AM

Im saying that cause ive seen them break

then they either had way too much torque on a stock axle, or had too large of tires on them.......

ProjectBeastlyRanger 08-24-2007 12:52 PM

To put a 302 in it with 35" tires that 8.8 will not hold up ..This might sound corny but my mom used to own a 69 ford f100 with a big block 468 and 38"Ground hawgs and a 9" rear end and even the 9" will snap I mean I get what all you are sayin yes 8.8 is fine for what I have right not and if you dont do a lot of muddin but in my opinion 8.8 are garbage

lifted97ranger 08-24-2007 12:59 PM

dude.....yea it will......

even if you have a doubt, put in a 31 spline 8.8 out of an Explorer.....that will hold more than any stock 302 and 35's will put on it......

and as far as your mom's truck, a STOCK 9" is not that strong.......they are barely stronger than a 31 spline 8.8 axle....

just an FYI, but the 8.8 in 31 spline version is put in ALL new F-150's, and was always installed in the solid rear axle Mustangs from the Fox body era to present solid rear axle versions....and they made more power with the Cobra than you will make with your Ranger....

you little 4.0 and 31's will not touch a stock 28 spline 8.8.....crap man i have been running 33's to 35's on my stock 28 spline 8.8 with absolutely NO problem for almost 65,000 miles.....and i have a little more power than stock coming out of my 4.0....

yours is a 28 spline axle....the 31 splines ONLY came stock in '02 FX4's and then in '03+ they were only in the FX4 Level II......

You are the man.

lifted97ranger 08-24-2007 01:18 PM

if you want, you can swap in an Explorer 31 spline 8.8 AND have the disc brakes that come on them real easy....

ProjectBeastlyRanger 08-24-2007 01:27 PM

I would like to see a 8.8 handle 675 hp with 38 inch ground hawgs going 300 ft in 8 inches of mud in 3.7 seconds ....you can ask anyone in my area there is not a single 8.8 under any mud truck darg car or street car for that matter around my area 8.8 have a bad reputation ...

Here is a video of the 69 with 675hp at thunder mountain its in 2wd 95% of the time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GULs0lLAjog

i do believe i was refering to what you would do in YOUR Ranger or any other Ranger.......no a 8.8 will not handle 675HP with 38's.....never said it would handle that.....what i did say was this:

Umm...yea there are different axles for different things dumbass. The 8.8 is fine for our trucks and the only way to break one is to put like 42s and rock crawl them. I had the 8.8 in my 96 cobra and it was pushing damn close to 650RWHP out of a built 306 S/C. It had Mosers in the tubes but still it was a 8.8. Obviously its not going to hold up to what Rockwells are for. Ill tell you what why don't you just go get yourself a Rockwell and put it up under your truck since you hate the 8.8 and call it a day. Get your facts and then attempt to start are argument before you do.

Is our front the 7.5"? what spline?

Dunno if you can tell but im fixin to regear soon, hence the questions.

correct, you have a 28 spline 8.8.....

the front is a Dana 35 reverse rotation axle.....

if you are doing nothing but gears, then the splines in the axle doesn't matter.....gears fit on a 28 spline 8.8 the same way as they do on a 31 spline 8.8......the only thing you need to concern yourself with the spline count is if you are installing a locker or limited slip in the rear (i haven't seen a locker or limited slip for the Dana 35 reverse rotation)....

well, a locker is comin for the rear too (only rear, not front), but I think ive got that sorted out). but gears for front and rear - are they both 8.8's?

If I have 8.8"s in front and rear, then what truck has the 7.5's?

by the way, thanks for dealin with my questions & helpin out, i appreciate it.

your front is a Dana 35.......the rear is a 8.8........

some Rangers come with a 7.5 rear axle.......it was only put in a couple hundred Rangers with 4.0's, then Ford realized that it wasn't strong enough....however the 7.5 is strong enough to be put in a 3.0 and the 4 cylinder engine trucks.....it is still used today in the newer Rangers without a 4.0...
