No reverse ranger?

Alright y'all I'm having some transmission problems in my 99 3.0L auto ranger. It shifts fine through all the gears but I have no reverse. So how do I find out if it's the reverse band and not another problem with my tran?

It is worth the money to have your transmission scanned and tested to see exactly what the problem is. Not sure what that would cost but I think it is about an hours time that most will charge and it has to be scanned with a different tool than your regular OBD reader is.

Do you have engine braking in L1?

I had the exact same issue with mine. I just swapped it for a jy trans but every shop said it was the band from how it acted. Apparently this isnt an uncommon issue either for a 4r44e

Na no engine braking. I think the truck wasn't completely stopped and the previous owner might have ripped from reverse to drive.

I stopped by a shop and guy said he couldn't guaranty fixing the band would work but it sounded like the problem. I just need a simple way to make sure it's the band and not any other problem.

The key with mine was to jack it up and see if the wheel still spun when it was put in reverse. Mine still spun backwards making it a friction issue vs an actual hard part issue. These transmissions use a joint 3rd gear/reverse clutch pack so if third isnt slipping then its probably the band

Its possible the gasket blew out on the low/reverse servo, band is a possibility and what happen to my trans where the reverse sprag broke.

The band and sprag are some of the first parts to into the trans so if they are toast a complete tear down is in order.

I just finished my sas. And I was loading my ranger onto a trailer and when I tried to shift into reverse I heard a loud crack and now my reverse doesn't work. It also seems like it slips in 3rd. Any thoughts? Please I can't believe I just through a ton of money into the swap and now it looks like I need a rebuild now.

That is how my first trans lost reverse, backing out the drive up a small hill and pop rollin forward.

I drove it like that for about 12k before swapping it. I did put the test plate on the trans to diagnosis if it was the servo not applying pressure, sadly the servo worked and the sprags deep in the trans were broken.

How much did you end up paying for the new tranny or rebuild?

I got a supposed rebuilt unit off eBay for 550, it has low pressure or something as it is not right. I ended up putting the most aggressive shift kit in and it shifts a little firmer than stock. Except WOT at 65 it really slams into third.

IMHO, get one with a good warranty.

Ok. Thanks. I will look into a hopefully running tranny. I cannot stand not having reverse this morning I got cut off by some idiot in a parking lot and I couldn't go back so I went through a bush and over a side walk.
