Your new transmission is 1998 to 2001?
Automatic or Manual?

1983 to 1997 2.3l transmissions did have speedometer hook up on tail shaft, 1995-1997 had no speedo cable but used the same drive/driven gear setup for a speed sensor
1998-2001 did not but they also didn't have 2.3l, it was 2.5l but same transmission bolt pattern
2002 and up 2.3l transmissions won't bolt to 1995 2.3l engine

So if you got a 1998 - 2001 transmission from a 2.5l engine and it is installed then your only option is to use an SGI-5E, from Dakota Digital
The SGI-5E can be used with your Rear ABS speed sensor(VSS), it can convert its 25,000PPM pulse down to 8,000PPM pulse that the speedometer/odometer and computer needs

Oh ok but how would I hook up the speed sensor if there is no hole on the tail shaft can I wire it in to the abs sensor or something

 

Yes, if transmission is 1998 - 2001 it won't have the hole for speed sensor.

You might, and I stress MIGHT, be able to swap tail shaft housing from the original transmission, if you have it, and the Drive gear inside it, to the new transmission, never done it so do not know.

1998 to 2001 Rangers used the ABS systems rear axle speed sensor(VSS) for speedometer/odo, computer and cruise, but.........................they used a 1998-2001 GEM(generic electronics module) to convert the 25,000PPM to 8,000PPM
That GEM will not work in a 1995 Ranger, so you need to use the SGI-5E for the conversion

The SGI-5E needs to be in the cab, out of the weather.
You will still have the 2 wire connector near the tail shaft for the old VSS, you will need to extend those two wires, or trace them into the Cab to hook to the OUT on the SGI-5E, these two wires sent signal from old VSS to speedometer/odo, computer and cruise

Then you will need to SPLICE into the 2 wires coming from the Rear Axle VSS, just splice in, like trailer plug wiring, as this sensor needs to stay connected to ABS Module, run these 2 wires into the cab for the IN on SGI-5E
SGI-5E also needs 12volts and ground, 12volts can be switched power, i.e. off when key is off, like radio power

You will need Volt/Ohm meter for this install
You need Ohm meter to test which VSS wire is/was a Ground
You need a Volt meter to test for 12volt power

 

 

Yes, the Dakota Digital SGI-5E was made so people could use electronic speedometers and computer controls in older vehicles, i.e. put a 2018 drive train in a 1939 Ford, lol.

You already have the VSS in the rear axle so 1/2 way there, just need the interface, the SGI-5E, but it is $85 and you do need to run wiring for it

The tail shaft housing swap is free, but not sure about the tail shaft itself, it needs to have a place for the speedometer Drive Gear to be installed, and I have never done it so can't say.
