97 3.0L Slave Cylinder

So, I am undertaking the process of dropping the transmission to access the slave cylinder and it says to take out the exhaust. Can it be done without taking out the exhaust? The connection from the exhaust manifold to the Y is not coming apart and seems like I would need to cut it out. That would lead to needing a new exhaust manifold and it just gets better.

One more question, what is the best tool to get at those top bolts holding the transmission to the engine?

In reply to my own question, I was able to remove the exhaust manifold and pull back the exhaust enough to move the transmission back about 8 inches. This was enough room to access the slave cylinder inside the bell housing and replace it. This way, I didn't have to fully remove the transmission from the truck.
I also found that an end wrench with a modified extension was sufficient to remove the top bolts holding the transmission in place. All is back together and working properly for now.
