98 speedo issue?

Guys,
I don't know if this is the right place to post this question. If not can a Mod let me know where to post it?

I have a '98 ranger 3.0 V6 with speedo issue. It works for a few minutes then dies after start up. I tried swapping the sensor in the rear dif. The problem got worse when i did that. The speedo didn't work but the OD light started blinking and the check engine light came on. It shifted at a higher RPM then before i swapped the sensor and MUCH harder shift. I pulled a code from the check engine and i got a 500 code i think. I swapped in the old sensor and got rid of the shift and high RPM issue. Still have a nonworking speedo though.
What else do i need to look at? I am stumped.

I picked up a speed sensor from the parts store. They say the tranny mounted sensor is the issue. Is this true? If so where is it mounted on the tranny? The part the gave me was a duralast #SU1019. Is that the correct part?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
