1998 ranger 4x4 that wont go in to 4 wheel drive high or low range. lights on the dash flash 5 times then go out.i replace the dash switch and the module. no help. i am not getting power to the connector at the motor.the after market books at the local parts house dont have the wiring for the 4x4 system. any idea where i can find them . thanks a lot.

 

Hi, Ihave that exact problem with a 1997 Ranger and just started to work on it. I have the factory service manual but not the ETVM manual. There is a partial diagram but not to helpful. I'll let you know if I get anywhere.
If anyone knows what the flashing code is all about, give us a shout.

could possibly be the speed sensor or shift motor.

if a light is flashing that typically means there are codes to be read, ford can read these numbers and have a better idea.

 

it means you have a problem. its not locking in, it has a motor that switches the transfer case, take your motor off and see if you can move it, the lights mean the motor is not working or stuck.

 

well i found the problem. it was the shift motor, replaced it and serviced the auto locking hubs and it works fine. now i am working on a 2003 explorer sport trac that wont come out of 4 wheel drive and the dash 4x4 lights wont come on at all. wish me luck. thanks guys.
