Axle info

Hi i have been reading about lockers and LSD and i am a little confused. I was woundering what kind of axle i have gearing and if i have limited slip or not. I know there is a number code that says but i don't know where it is or how to read it.

Also if you have Independent front suspension how does the gearing and limited slip/ locker work i know the back is straight axle but im a little confused on how the front works is it Limited slip or locked form the factory. I get how straight axle works but not the idependent. Thanks

My truck is a 99 b3000 4x4 reg cab.

you DO have independent front suspension, you have a solid axle in the back.

most likely a Ford 8.8" out back.

i can tell you real quick if you take a pic of the axle, and the little metal tag that's bolted to the axle.

or go look at it, it should say like

4 L 10, that would mean it has 4.10:1 axle ratio with a limited slip..

somewhere on there, probably before the 4 L 10, will say 88 or 75(maybe on the 75) but if its 8 8 then you have an 8.8" axle..

its got a differential, then instead of solid shafts there are joints on the CV shaft that allow them to travel up and down.

stock there is no locker or l/s up front but they are pretty cheap and easy to do,

To figure out what you have in back, look at your door tag sticker. At the bottom near the middle it will say Axle with 2 letters/digits underneath that. Then just look here

And if your missing the door tag sticker, here's how to decipher what the axle tag says.

Well this sucks I have 86 so no limited slip for me. What would I need to do to get limited slip or how much would a front and rear locker cost.

If you get lucky you can find a LS axle at a junkyard out of another Ranger and swap it in.

i would get a selectable locker for the front because a locker for a dd isnt the greatest and i would get a limited slip for the rear

Yes when you regear you need 2 sets of gears. No one makes a selectable locker for the Ranger Dana 35. They might for the TTB suspension but not the IFS suspension.

What is in the front then. I know the back is a dana 35 what is the front. Also is a locker a new set of gears or is a locker and LS seperate from the gears.

Front is a special Dana 35 only found in Rangers, Sport Tracs and Explorers. The rear can be a Ford 7.5 or 8.8 but since you have a 4wd its a 8.8.

I looked at the axle code so it's fine unless you don't trust the code
