ABS light on - now off and functioning fine??
 

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem..


A was trying to stop earlier on some ice and the ABS system kicked in. There was a car coming so I pretty much stood on the pedal and let the ABS do its thing. After that the ABS light stayed on and I no longer had anti-lock brakes. I could lock them up anywhere I wanted and they stayed locked.

I went across town to a safe location and made a few speed runs hitting the pedal and the ABS never worked. Then I shut the truck off and restarted it. The light was off and the ABS system works fine now.


Anyone know what might have happened? What might have stuck to make the light stay on and the system to deactivate itself? Am I looking at replacing something real soon?

I've actually had the same thing happen but started differently. I started my truck up one day after work and it was idling rough. The ABS and brake light were on. It was raining so I turned on my wipers and I got nothing. So I'm like "WTF is going on". I turned off the truck and turned it back on after a minute and everything was fine. I figured it was a bad start that flashed the computer or shorted the system or something.

In your situation I have a feeling it is the front ABS sensors

I hate systems like this ABS bullsh*t. It's just one more thing to go wrong that I can't properly diagnose..

EXACTLY. Drive the 89, it is more reliable lol.

if one of the wheel speed sensors flatlined during the stop, the light will go on and disable ABS. if the light comes back on, have a shop scan it for a code. check all three wheel speed sensor plugs for water intrusion

that sucks. i had to stand on the pedal once too and had to steer off the road to avoid the car in front of me because the brakes just didn't want to do sh*t. My light also stayed on but when i shut the truck off and turned it back on it was ok again. System has a mind of its own. I might pull the fuse along with the bulb when i get my new truck haha

That type of crap makes me A. Hate that I only have RABS B. Hate my pre-01 10 inch rotors and autozone brake pads lol

Since the ABS is working again I'm assuming it didn't store a code..


I'll check the connectors, and see if I can have a mechanic (family friend) use the ABS scanner at his shop for free, to give me more info IF the light comes back on. It hasn't yet..

my front tires were the ones that the abs kicked in on they were pulsating. even with the pedal to the floor lmao it was pretty scary but then it started randomly locking up when going slow to a stop...like at 2mph id hit brake and the fronts would slam and lock lol

if you figure anything out, update this thread if you dont mind incase my next trucks abs decides to go wack haha

any time the abs light or check engine light come on, it will store a code. Even if the light is back off, there should be a code stored in memory

Ok, I guess I'll have that mechanic check it out for me as soon as I can..

Anybody with a decent scanner should be able to check to see the code histroy. my ABS light is on permanently cause i unplugged mine, RWABS is a pain in the ass to deal with, i used to have them working and everything (the wires to the module we're boogered, so those got fixed) and then as soon as i started locking up the brakes the light has come on and won't stay off. i'll crawl under there when its warmer and not wet to see whats up. i'd say it could be a wire exposed somewhere. if one wire is messed up, the whole system feels the need to shut down.
